This has probably been covered before but I haven't managed to find a definitive answer so any advice would be much appreciated.

I want to find out how best to sort out my insurance this year. I currently have full NCB on a BMW and I have four years NCB on a motorbike.

However, I am selling both in order to buy a four wheeled toy (probably a TVR) and run a cheap car for everyday use (Toyota Corolla - nice !).

So obviously the full NCB would be best to use to insure the TVR, but, can I use the NCB from the bike policy to insure the Toyota? Or, can I use the full NCB across both cars in some way because obviously I can only drive one at a time?

Also I was wondering whether it would actually end up cheaper to try to get a traders policy.

What do you guys & girls think?

Cheers

Paul

From experience (more than one car and more than one bike at home) you can only use one NCB against one other vehicle (the good news is that if you claim, it doesn't affect the other policies). Insurers don't usually take bike NCB against a car. Traders insurance and fleet insurance require at least seven vehicles before they make financial sense. Sorry, but they've got you (and me and everyone) by the short and curlies.

If you're lucky, you might find a company who will "mirror" your NCB from one car to the next... but these are few and far between...

Sunninghill definitely mirror the NCB for a TVR. I know cos I've done it! They're very competitive too!

I used to run a traders policy when I dabled in used cars a few years back. It cost about £2,000 difficult to get for performance cars and nigh on impossible for fibre glass cars. But they will let you cover a car for yourself within that price.

Insure the boring car with the full NCB and then get Sunninghill or Cheam to mirror the NCB on a new policy for the TVR.

Or buy an older TVR or other performance car and take out a limited mileage classic policy, as they don't have NCBs.

Admiral will mirror NCB, and also allow you to switch it between husband an wife.

So in one year I get four years of NCB from my wife's family car

OK - here is the companies that would mirror the NCB from the Noble to the Elise

Footman James : 0121 561 6250 or 0121 561 6218 (www.footmanjames.co.uk/site/telephone.asp)

A-Plan : 0800 05 05 05 (www.a-plan.co.uk/cgi-bin/branch.pl?branch=beaconsfield)

Whilst the rest "said they did it" the quote were just pathetic

Be warned. If you mirror the NCB across more than one vehicle, you lose it on all of them if you lose it on one of them (or so my broker told me...)

Can also reccommend Footman James, although I've never had to claim through them yet.

So do I and they are excellent. Ultima GTR and Nissan 300 ZX TT Import. They even gave me laid up cover for the Ultima while the new engine is being built, for £300, when all the other companies said they don't do laid-up cover - Highly recomended. Give em' a try.

Just "protect" both bonuses - that way it doesn't matter if you claim (in terms of discount - of course they are liable to put up the underlying premium if you do claim )

Sunninghill told me you can't protect the "mirrored" NCB until you have built up NCB in it's own right as it were. (If you can understand that - well done - :mustlearntospeakengleesh:. You can protect it on the car which you are mirroring though. They are very competitive.

A-Plan and FJ have said to me that both are protected upon paying the additional premium on both of them - but I'm going to ask them to send that in writing before I take it out!

I had Cheam mirror the Corrado's full NCB when I bought the Chimaera in August 2001. The only condition was that they wouldn't protect the mirrored NCB.

When the Chimaera's policy came up for renewal a year later, Cheam weren't particularly competative and Sunninghill were the best of the bunch. They accepted the NCB on the Chimaera without question (although obviously wanted proof of NCB in the form of the renewal letter from Cheam).

As far as I am aware there is no longer any link between the Corrado and Chimaera policies. They are entirely separate and their NCBs are independant.

Obviously if I have an accident / shunt / claim I have to notify the insurers of all cars that I am the policyholder or a named driver on, but that is true in all cases, not just when you have a mirrored NCB policy.

They're saying that you can't protect a policy with a mirrored 5 years NCB until you have been claim free for a further 5 years? Seems very suspicious.

Cheam told me that I couldn't protect the NCB on the mirrored policy for the first year, but from year 2 onwards I could.
