How do you (tr)eat yours?
Discussion
Inspired by the cadburys egg ads (sorry, I needed to call it something) and the 'mechanical sympathy' thread I'm conducting a straw poll of PH driving styles.
Personally I'm more the listening type (see mech sympathy threat), though a good B road will see me throwing it around quite a lot more than usual.
I suppose the test of it is that I've only ever had one serious 'moment' on a road I've driven before, whereas I know a few people who'll have twelve every time they go to Argos.
So off we go, open floor - how would you class yourself? Are you sympathetic to the car, do you listen to it's every whispered secret - or do you grab it and push it right to it's limits whenever the chance arrises (this still applies to track cars, just not as much
) and worry about the bills later?

I have owned Bertie my 'E' reg Nova for 8 years now - get it serviced every six months irrespective of the mileage done and it gets a wash most weeks. But then it has never let me down. OK it gets a good thrashing around the country roads when it is dry ('bout as much as fun gets in a Nova) but I love it to bits. I would be the same with what ever car I owned.
I could never be one of these people who change their car frequently - I buy a car and then keep it until it expires.

i have a scitzophrenic (sp.?) driving style, either i'm thrashing the nuts off my car or driving much more sedately...
i keep meaning to treat it better all the time, but don't always...
however, i do wait for it to warm up, and i look after it quite well, keep it clean, service it every 6k miles etc...

Oil + filter change every 3000miles
Service every 6000miles
Never rev'd until the oil pressure hits proper levels
Never over 3k revs till the water temp at normal
Always "got an ear on" for odd noises, brakes and suspension uprated and kept in tip top conditions (costs a fortune)
After that, pedal to the metal - LTES GO!!

I'm very friendly to my cars (except the XSi Peugeot 306 because it was the most crap underpowered car I've ever owned!). I only rev to 6000rpm in the Elise as a general rule (when "Pushing On") and I brake in nice straight lines gradually before corners allowing myself plenty of room for error.
My girlfriend has the same approach as Big_M and has owned her current Mini for the last 11 years (although she would tell you she's not old enough to have owned a car that long...). Unfortunately 11 years seems to have been its limit.

Cars or bikes I let 'em get warm before thrashing and change gear properly & dont abuse the cluch. Change the oil with quality semi synth at half the mileage of whatever the manufacturer recomends, then I thrash 'em hard & bounce 'em off the limiter in every gear & basically drive/ride 'em in the manner they were intended for.
On hard driven road cars (I'm not talking supercars here tho!)I usally get 150-200k from a (car) engine 150k from the gearbox & 80-100k from a clutch. And pretty much half those figs on a bike- but then ive never done more than 50k on a bike.
Dont get long out of pads or tyres tho say 2k from pads & 3k from tyres on bike or maybe 8k pads & tyres on car.

I prefer a lower powered - great handling car for everyday. Means I can thrash it everywhere without to much chance of loosing my license.
I always heel and toe, when pushing on or not, and rear lift off oversteer is a regular on my commute. I always try to be as smooth as possible and this results in tyres lasting well - 20 - 25k on a pair of front Yoko's on my Golf!
With the kit car, same applies really, only the speeds go up! Lots of over steer in the wet and dry.

My cars become my babies, friends constantly take the piss as too how much i wash and look after them, At least once a month i give the car the full autoglym waxing treatment. To me a car signifies something about you- i try and keep my cars clean, immaculate inside and the engine in tip top condition.
Cold starts mean i keep the engine at or below 2000rev's till it warms up, one squeak or funny noise from the engine and i become paranoid a previous thrashing has knackered the thing.
One day i scuffed the alloy on my front offside wheel.....gutted was not the word.
People may see it as sad but if your spending thousands of pounds on something why let it look like sh*t

I'm a coward. Anyone who has followed me will realise that I'm not the quickest - I value my skin too much. I have found as I get older I seem to be getting cars which are more capable and thus if I use 80% of its capablity (leaving 20% for me being a numpty), I can stay on the black stuff. I suppose the other way of putting it is that as a driver I'm a big girls blouse ! (Aplogies to any big girls). (Helps with brake & tyre wear).
I also like to allow the engine & tyres to warm before giving it some welly. Any other way you pay for it as the power delivery system gets f****d sooner.

My only rule is to leave it alone whilst it warms up.
Once a few miles are under the belt, the car is fair game for any thrashing that I deliver. And I do thrash it - but then I wouldn't have bought the car I did if I was going to drive like a volvo flat cap buffoon.
It's a deal I have with the car - I get it serviced by the main dealer at least as often as the handbook says and often sooner, and get everything attended to. In return, it doesn't let me down and squeals with delight at it races towards 7,500 rpm. (before you all start, that's before the red line on the P1 - limiter is at 8,250)
Whey hay! Get out of the way fools!
