Well, I suppose with all the warmongering taking place over the last few days/weeks/months It brings up a thought in my mind that is just too important to leave be ...
Should war break out with North Korea/Iraq (and whomever else feels like being hero's) and the USA (and Britain)are you prepared to act against them. I remember too well from growing up in a war torn country, We had no choice, we were called to arms. If you did not agree to bear arms against your enemy, they locked you up in a prison for two years...
Question is though, would you voluntarily take up arms to preserve and protect your country and folk??

Of course I would - gladly.
But I don't think the Army's bureaucracy would ever cope with any sudden need for troops - at present it takes a minimum of six weeks to process entry (or re-entry in my case) into the TA - they make the Passport Office or DVLA shine as beacons of efficiency.

If anyone thinks I'm going to take up arms on behalf of a group of countries run by people with their own private agendas and a complete disregard for me & mine, they can think again.

The question was not one to catch anyone out, or prove manhood or macho'ism, I had a debate with some chaps here at work and asked the same question, Got a really mixed bag of answers ..Most were "very brave and macho "yeah, we'll go kick their asses", some were "fence sitters" "I'll only go if I am called up" (and they would go out kicking and screaming) and others said absolutely not "Fcuk that, I wont risk my life for someone elses"... then there were the few (simple minded) that said they would stay home and take care of the woman!

With people knowing what they know now as opposed to what they knew during the 1st & 2nd world wars I don't think the system could cope.
The number of objectors staying at home on the grounds of not wanting to end up like that torso in Saving Private Ryan would be huge, there'd be no room to lock em all up.......I suppose you could shoot them instead though........

Fortunately we are unlikely to get into a war requiring massive amounts of cannon fodder, which lets be honest, is pretty much all conscrpts or troops with a couple of weeks training are good for.
The current strategy seems to be "bomb them for a couple of weeks, then send in one or two lads to accept the surrender."
A gross generalisation of course, but the role of he infantry is now that of highly trained comparatively small formations (small compared to those of past wars of course).
The force multipliers of heavy naval, air and artillery support make a small force more effective than one many times larger.
(Compare the sizes of the infantry and armoured forces verses their opposition in the first gulf war, Iraqi divisions were smashed by forces a fraction of their size in manpower. Then again in some instances they also surrendered to passing supply helicopters...)

I would if I thought there was a genuine threat to the British mainland being invaded (i.e. a couple of million enemy troops sitting in northern France or Eastern Europe) but otherwise no. I don't want to be a pawn in some politicians game of grand strategy. Plus I'm a coward and don't want to get shot
