Why do people insist on describing the common cold as "flu"? Influenza is a nasty viral infection that can wipe you out good and proper for a week or more. It can lead to hospitalisation and death for the elderly. In 1918, 20 million people died worldwide as a result of a Spanish flu outbreak.
- A severe cold can be nasty but it isn't flu.
- Antibiotics ARE NOT A CURE FOR FLU. They are NOT a cure for the common cold. Antibiotics are very bad things to have to take and will only be prescribed under the right circumstances.
- Your doctor will not give you antibiotics for your "flu" no matter how much you beg him, he knows best so stop wasting his time.
So regardless of whether you have flu or the common cold, do everyone a favour and stay warm at home in bed, drink plenty and stay away from your GP.
For those people who struggle bravely into work with "the flu" I have two things to say:
1) If you really had flu you would not be capable of coming into work.
2) Get your horrible fcuking germs out of my airspace and stop sneezing on me!

The worst thing is in days gone by (thankfully not so much these days I think) people going to the docs and bullying/brow beating/being a complete pita to the doc until he gives them antibiotics for cold or flu, such over-use leading us to the situation today where antibiotics are becoming less and less effective.
The problem now is that doctors are inclined not to prescribe anti-biotics even where they are a viable treatment..
I had a right feckin to do with my doctors last year over an ear infection I had.. could have just given me the damned anti-biotics.. but no.. had to wait until I was in so much pain that I had to be carted off to the hospital, so they could prescribe anti-biotics.. and enormous pain-killers.
And yes, this is because of morons who think that anti-biotics cure viruses. And Grauniad reading woman doctors who evidently think that we should be making up herbal tea to cure our ills..

I must admit it makes me laugh when people go to the doctors with a cold, as if they are going to do anything everyone knows there is no cure for the cold.. and anyway the doctor never does fcuk all when there is somthing wrong with you as their budgets run out !!!!

I've only had the misfortune to have "proper" flu once, about 20 years ago!
However, I can still remember it to this day and will certainly know if I'm unlucky enough to get it again.
It was 10 days before I could even think about going to work, and I didn't feel
for a good 8 weeks after
Hence, no matter how bad or heavy a cold I get, I describe it as just that.

For the last few years my wife and I have been having the annual flu jabs that become available from your GP in early winter. As I am not a pensioner and don't have a chronic respiratory illnness it costs me £10, her as an asthmatic a prescsiption fee. Excellent value for money, haven't had flu since we started having the jabs. I realise that the flu jab isn't a certain preventative measure, but for £10.....

The real flu epidemic in 1918 caused over 20 MILLION deaths in Europe and it was suspected that over 100 MILLION all told when one takes the indian and chinese dead into consideration..............
