Right, racked off here - Disney, for all of what they say about being for kids and best kind of education and entertainment for them - they are just pi55ing me off...

Bought the twin DVD set of Toy Story for my little boy. He loves the stories and loves the characters. Cant stop him from wanting to watch the flaming films - but that is a different story...What really racks me off is the advertising.

Ok, so you are going to get some trailers at the beginning of the DVD I suppose (not that any other DVDs that I have contain adverts!) , but being DVD they can control what you can do (unlike a video). So they can effectively stop you from skipping them to go to the main DVD menu. You have to go through the trailers (though you can forward to the next trailer, you still have go to each trailer!). That is SO bloody anoying and why do they have to do this? Commercialism.... pure and simple....

And to cap it all - they obviously dont think as they advertise the bloody Toy Story DVD on the Toy Story DVD.... What the fcuk is that about... do they not quality check these? What next?

Not only are they the most expensive DVDs around, but they force trailers on you, and dont add many additional features to it.... pure and simple commercialism with little in it for the customer. Why oh why do we put up with this...?!?!?

And who is leading the prosecution of DVD pirates and the people who cracked the DVD protection? Disney Corporation.... two faced misserable fcukers...

I would love to say that I would never buy a Disney product again, but I probably cant avoid it... shame really.

Cheers,

Paul.

P.S. Dont get me started on the "Americanisation" of the stories that Disney have covered - like Anastasia or Pocahontas (she doesnt live happily ever after and doesnt marry the army man - they DIE!). What are they doing???

Reminds me of a story about the Tivo thingy you can get for your TV that records programs for you and skips the adverts.

One of the bosses of a US TV station called people who used these devices thieves!!!

Crazy fools!

This p1sses me off too. The utility of DVD is seriously compromised by crap like this - there is no reason why you shouldn't just load the disk and go.

On a related subject, the menu systems are getting more complex and less functional. M0nsters Inc get an award for its menu, but it takes an age to load ... you soon get sick of the Pink Pantheresque intros when you can't skip them and they go on and on and on and on ... do you know how many times a two year old can watch M0nsters Inc. in a week?

Seems that bored website designers (you know, those nice folk whose graphics prevent you from getting to the data) have found a new medium in which to express their creativity.

Hmmm... Ms Podie gets knarked about them "destroying" Pooh Bear...

As for the DVD's... buy a Pioneer player. They have a memory button, so you can skip to a certain point in the DVD instantly... well my 525 model did...

I find if I hit the "menu" button on the remote, when the adverts start, it skips to the main play menu. Of course things may be different in the UK version...

Yeah Disney are capatalist scum, Walt Disney couldn't even draw and was a tyranical employer who based his working practices on the Henry Ford pricinple of de-skilling the workforce. A bit like McDonalds et al.

Anyway,

go to www.pir8forums.com, register, go to the DVD selling forum and get all the Disney you want for £4 a go.

Magic.

Too right it's different - Americans wouldn't put up with this crap - that's why region 1 DVDs are cheaper and generally have better features.

We're robbed blind over here by fat media giants.. As for Disney & their sharky manouevres, Walt would turn in his grave to see some of the things done to his empire in the name of greed.

Don't know about that m8, from what I've been reading recently, Walt was one of the original fat cat corporate types.

Some DVD players may try to override the settings on the disk itself. My bugbear is that my DVD player (ok so its a Playstation2) sticks to the disk programming - but the issue is that Disney have made a concious choice to encode the disk to prevent this from happening - cynical barstewards...

Paul

The reason Region 1 are more feature laden is simply because the R1 release doesnt have to have 5 different soundtracks for all the minority languages...

....like English?

How easy is it to get players that will read more than just European format?

And, I assume that the simplest way is play using a PC with the appropriate software, is there an easy way to skip these trailers with software (can't remember what I am using at home - is it called "PowerDVD"?)

Many retailers will upgrade most of the players they sell.. both of mine came direct from the retailers as all-region player..

DVD on PC is mostly crap unless you have an MPEG2 decoder card.

We're not rid of him though - he's frozen so they can bring him back later. Least I think it was him I saw while I was going through the Tesco's freezers looking for something for tea last night

Disney was the Bill Gates of animation - loathed and admired at the same time. He took the animation media to new levels, on many occasions risking his entire studio to do so. He was a hard task master and like all the great innovators (eg Thomas Edison, Colin Chapman, Werner Von Braun etc )knew how to recruit the right people and get the most out of them. It's true that many of the most famous Disney characters (with the exception of Mickey Mouse) were not drawn or animated by Disney himself but he often outlined to his artists and animators the type of character he wanted. He even used to act out the characteristics wanted at board room meetings. That's how Pluto and Goofy got invented.

The book "The Real Walt Disney" by Sheriden Morley is a must read for anyone interested in the man.
