Boring I Know ......... But What Else Is There ???
Discussion
I'm looking at getting a Shitroen C5 HDi estate as a general workhorse/loadlugger. Now I know it aint the most glamorous of vehicles out there, but, what else can I get thats about a year old, under 15k miles, huge load space, 45mpg, got one or two toys and cost about £10k?
Suggestions very welcome.

For Daddy-dom, what about...
VW Passat 1.8T (or 1.9D) Estate with Superchip upgrade.
Audi A4 Avant with superchip (same as above really)
Mundano 2.0 Ghia estate
Laguna Estate
Or.. One of these...
Subaru Forester 2.0 Turbo - same engine as the Impreza IIRC. Top motors that will scare many a quick car, plus Subaru are renouned for lasting forever and treating you like a king at service time.
Go-on, you know you'll get bored stupid if you get something without a bit of get up and go.

I'd love most of whats been suggested, but I'm affraid this car really does have to earn it's keep and is required for a purpose .... I wouldn't be suggesting the C5 if it was just a nice estate car I needed!

Slightly older V70? more quality than that french thing - and still loadsaspace.
I tell you what.. if you're really insistent, I'll swap you a nice old renault espace for the ultima...
ok, maybe you should give me a bit of money as well to make it fair..
the espace has moved our family to the south of france and back.. and always goes straight through the MOT with no probs.. so I think that's a good deal really.

the cits arent as bad reliability wise as many people think on the c5 i think the hydrulics suspesion etc are warranted for 100,000 miles , they do use multiplex wiring which sometimes may have an odd moment and is a pian in the arse if you want an alarm fitted , all the wires are white !
I keep banging on about this, but if you can live without a diesel (and I can!) buy my (oops: a) Pug 406 V6 estate. It will earn it's keep, 'cause it's as big as Citroen inside but much nicer, faster, handles better and more toys, 20k services (where they only change the oil)... need I go on? It's reasonably economical i.e. 30+ on a fully laden run 27 to 29 elsewhere.
Just to help out, Autocar got 35mpg out of ther C5 diesel estate, so you wouldn't even save much, you'd hate it and then you'd sell it at a huge loss to buy something more interesting. You know it's true!
Mine is in Other Peugeots on PH, if you're interested.
Mike.

The thing with those Citroen estates is they are vast once you knock the seats down! Would love to say that they are unbreakable and that you can just chuck stuff in them - but then again, you pays the money and takes the choice.... Ok, so some trim might fall off but it should just run and run and run and run and run - bit like mine which I am trying to kill but it just wont die!!!
£10K will get a nearly new fully loaded 2.2HDi - which is a cracker by the way. That engine is really good and you can even get an Auto too - which isnt as daft as it sounds, I have driven one and I was shocked on how good it is. Ok, so it look like a dogs diner and the quality aint as good as it could be. But its honest, non pretentious and one hell of a smoooothhhh cruiser...
Personally look to spend less than £10K on a C5 - if you want to spend £10K then maybe look at something else.
Cheers,
Paul

Be warned on the Omega TD though - spoken to a couple of Taxi drivers recently and they say dont do it! They get to 100,000 and eat head gaskets. Is rumoured to be that BMW supplied the engines to Vauxhall and not BMW standards..... a good engine (remember its the 115 engine and not the 143 one) but not quite a good as it could be.
