I get my new car (Porsche Boxster)in 4 weeks, and am currently have the following problem.
We currently have 2 cars, a Vectra V6 (T reg) and a BMW 318TDS (P reg). They are both worth about the same, give or take £500. My girlfrind is currently refusing to let me part ex the BMW against the Porsche.
I want to keep the Vectra because:-
1) Its newer, and a hell of a lot quicker and better to drive.
2) The BMW now has over 100k miles, and things are going to start to go wrong very soon, I suspect.
3) Vectra is still under factory warranty
4) Interor of Vectra is in better condition
5) Vectra is the more practical car, being a hatchback
6) The stereo in the Vectra is by far superior to the one in the BMW and has a hands free telephone kit for a mobile telephone fitted.
7) The Vectra has a private plate, which will be lost, because DVLC can't guarantee that I'll get the new V5 through within the 4 weeks required.
8) Servicing the Vectra is about 50% cheaper than the BMW
Girlfriend wants to keep the BMW because "She Loves it!!!"
I know that I am probably going to get slated, because I own a Vectra, but it makes far more sense both financially and practically to keep the Vectra and part ex the BMW.
Can you please provide me with your comments, so I can show them to my girlfriend, in the hope that she will actually listen to reason

The fact that you had the good sense to get the only Vauxhall lump worth a light may save you from most of the flaming 
Tell her if she wants to maintain the Bavarian Muck Wagon herself, pay all the servicing bills, put fuel in it, pay for the upgrade to the stereo, then by all means she can keep it. If not, then STFU and get on with driving the Vauxhall...

Easy one to sort = put the plate on retention as long as it is taxed & MOT fill out the paperwork at DVLA local Office and PX car, tell the garage that you have retained the plate so will notify them of new reg as soon as it comes through
note; vectra should go back to its original reg (if it had one prior to private plate)

318TDS - They dont call them TeDiouS for nothing. Not a nice car and probably the worst in the range bar the underpowered 316i. Could it be that it is a BMW and the other is a Poxyhall?
Personally keep the Vectra and trade the BMW. Once you start getting beyond 100,000 the UK car buying public takes a dim view (for no major reason). Get rid while you can to save as much money as poss.

shouldnt be a problem.
pop into the dealer and tell them that you want to retain the plate and that you are going to apply now and that as soon as you get the reg details back you will inform them, basically the vectra goes to the dealer with the private plate still on it, along with the tax and they can do what they want with the vehicle ubtil you get a new V5.
A couple of months ago I retained a private Plate of Mrs M's car the day before I Px'd it, dealer was fine about it and V5 came through within about 2 weeks.
If you have got a local DVLA Office you can go in and get the ball rolling quite quickly, you need: V5, Tax disc, MOT and Insurance certificate and your chequebook (transfer/retention for available at the counter)
