Good grief, where was the BBC's bias towards the government this time? There's a few knighthoods down the drain.
How many people watching this programme swallowed this crap about ever increasing congestion? For Christ's sake, you can only drive one car at a time, so there cannot be more cars than there are drivers. Unless the population increases significantly, I cannot see the level of traffic volumes alluded to by Begg, Livingstone and all their cronies. Not one mention was made of street narrowing, traffic light rephasing, bus lanes, cycle lanes, road works and so on. Get rid of all that stuff and the traffic will flow again.
While having a great time bashing Tony and his lot, which I thoroughly enjoyed, there were no suggestions from anyone else who might have either an answer or merely an opinion. Where were the AA, RAC, FHA, ABD? I am sure that they might have had some alternatives. The programme simply said that the government has reneged on it's transport policies, spent all the money on commitees, enquiries and studies, it's going to get worse, the cabinet are a load of chickens, won't be interviewed, it's not their fault, we're all doomed, go and slit your wrists now. All carefully timed to be broadcast the night before some of you poor sods have to drive into London the next morning to face Ken's Commuters Paradise for the Peace Loving People of London.
It's great to see the Blair government shown up to be the incompetents that they really are, but it is also sad to see that nothing has been improved, to see that enormous waste of money on absolutely zip.
I don't have to commute, I work on an oil rig, and when I come home, I live out in the country. I feel so very sorry for the rest of you that have to live with this travesty.
Here's my tuppence worth.
I travel to work twice a MONTH. I live, eat, sleep and work on the rig for two weeks, then one of my colleagues comes out on a (free) helicopter to take over. I will write a report to tell hime what has been happening, what is ongoing etc, and I go home again, to do whatever I please for two weeks. That's six months work, six months of free time or holiday. No rush hour commuting. No waiting for the weekend, and then the mad scramble to be first on the golf course/ ski slopes/ track/ beach/ restaurant/ pub or whatever.
While this may not suit all of you, consider this. You could do the same. Your place of work does not have to be within commuting distance. If the company goes bust, try somewhere else. The employer provides accomodation, laundry, food, recreation areas, gym facilities, whatever. Work a fixed period, get relieved, go home for an equal period, have fun. Go drive your car on empty roads after nine in the morning in the middle of the week. Play golf on an empty golf course. Go abroad as many times as you like for some fun in the sun. NO TRAFFIC JAMS.
It's just a thought, but I believe it could work for some people, and at the same time remove a lot of traffic congestion anyway.
Any other suggestions?
