Top management can get away with a clean desk.

For the rest of us, it looks like we're not working hard enough.

Build huge piles of documents around your workspace.

To the observer, last year's work looks the same as today's work; it's volume that counts. Pile them high and wide.

If you know somebody is coming to your desk, bury the document you'll need halfway down in an existing stack and rummage for it when he/she arrives.

I used to have a newspaper clipping titled "A messy desk is the sign of a sophiticated mind".

I lost it during an office move so it is probably under one of the piles of crap on my desk...

I like to refer to my desk as my 'Random Access' filing system.
Every night I 'Archive' unwanted paperwork in the round filing cabinet under my desk.

What desk? I got a whole workshop, plus a van, but I got nowhere to sit and write! So the crap piles up around the workshop instead.

I think people expect to find living things in the pile that has evolved on my desk. It keeps their visits to a comfortable minimum

At Bloomberg in London, they wanted a clean desk after work. So all the employees just dumped their paper stuff into the drawer of their desks. Coming back next morning it was the opposite procedure... high up to the management. True class... it's better where I work now. I haven't a Mount Everest on my desk but it's getting close to Pikes Peek in my drawer.
