Im looking to change my current car peugeot 206Gti, but this time as middle age approaches
i need something more refined. however i still want the performance to be decent, needs to be a nearly new as im doing about 20,000 a year and dont want it to be unreliable. needs to still have that special feeling on the twisties but on the motor way i dont want to be reminded that we only pay a fiver each from the road tax for the up keep any suggestions. also with 3 points i no longer want to run around saying hi copper nick me nick me, as the current bright orange motor does.
tempted by some of the new diesels
any suggestions?
Depends on your budget of course.
I really like BMWs, and their diesels are supposed to be pretty good?
I've found modern Fords (Mondeo onwards) to handle pretty well, but the engines aren't the most refined.
Haven't tried the Alfa 156 myself, but hear they're pretty good too and likely to be cheaper than the equivalent BM or Merc.

I have to say the T5 seems very fast.
Too fast in fact for what looks like an every day estate. My freind had one at the same time I had the TVR and it may have been the way he drove but I would not have raced him in it !
I've had 2, an 850 and a V70. The new V70 has 250 bhp but actually feels slower than the old 230 bhp 850. Could be the illimination of torque steer though!
Either way, fastest way from A to B with a Georgian chest of drawers in the back. (Good street sleeper as well).
we looked at VW's and ovlovs (expensive) and skodas (estate is a bit ugly) . . .we wnated an estate, sporty(ish) and fun to drive on a 12k budget
we're heading towards a 1 yr old 12k miles Mondeo estate 2.5 v6 zetec S . . . .apparently a good drive, I'll find out on Sat (we need something that'll tow, was another consideration)
