Is it just me or is Chirac prime candidate out of national leaders for a good kicking? Not just his behaviour on the whole Iraqi crisis, undermining NATO, telling the soon to be joining EU countries of Eastern Europe at the recent summit that they missed 'Good opportunity to be quiet'. Now he tops it with welcoming the only man in the world to model his facial hair on Adolf Hitler, bloody Mugabe, with open arms. Is he doing this just to piss Britain off?

You've forgotten the german socialist/greenslime on your list.. Schröder and Fischer, even Chirac isn't as big a w*nker as these eejits.... Fischer, a convicted criminal, 1968 protest marches "assault on a BiB", Schröder, married 4 times (4 women CAN'T be wrong) and a feckin socialist who wants to erect another DDR under the guise of European Socialism! FFS!! And don't forget that Fischer is DIRECTLY responsible (his ministry gave the export licenses in 1996) for exporting bio and chemical manufacturing equipment (naturally under the guise of pharmaceutical eqpt.) This report has just hit the fan here!!! About time we Ceaucescu'd all these damned pinkogreenslime!
You have to understand that the French look after No1 first. They currently have agreements in force with Iraq that will net them considerable dollars when the Iraq oil comes on line again. They do not
want America controlling it and would rather Iraq was allowed to sell their oil on the open market.
A further illustration of this French attitude was during the currency crisis on the late 60's. France had millions of US dollars in reserve. At that time America still had the gold standard (where a dollar could be exchanged for the equivalent value in gold). France loaded a huge ship with dollars, sailed to the US and demanded the value in gold, which Fort Knox was obliged to supply. This made the currency crisis even worse. When Germany suggested they may do the same, America said it would pull out of NATO and leave Germany to the USSR. The US no longer adopts the gold standard.

Ok, fair enough, but I still think Chirac is being an even bigger w*nker at the moment. Its one thing to look after your own interests, but another to absolutely
everyone else over in doing so. Ironic thing is that people/countries that tend to behave in that manner are doing themselves no favours, because things like that get remembered for a long time...Will be quite a lucrative market for weaponary too, once the US have got rid of Saddam.

Ah no. All Exocets sold to Argentina were sold before the war - they were desperately trying to buy more on the black market, but couldn't (would probably have changed the face of the war)

I actually respect the French. They know when to tell the EU to shove it up their arses. Or they just sign the
treaties and then don't enforce them or give much of a shit. Meanwhile stupid old England goes and hires a load of bloody cucumber inspectors to verify that they are all withing tolerances. Our nation of jobsworths could learn a lot from the French. In fact the reason the French piss me off is because I can see that they approach Europe in the correct fashion. You certainly can't be as anal as we are and survive in a union with people playing fast and loose like the French.

More than the exocet itself, the real threat was the French Navy Super Entendard 11F fighter which was used by the Argentines to deliver the missile.
It was able to avoid detection by British radar all the way to the ordinance delivery point. At this point, it climbed to 8,000 feet for weapons release. Only then did it show up on the British radar screens, at which point it was too late to take any effective countermeasures. The Super Entendard then went Zone 5 and high-tailed it back to it's base.
The French had agreed not to export this fighter, and explained away the existance of 2 in the Argentine inventory as Evaluation aircraft on loan for possible future export sales...Jim'85TE

Shame we couldn't send some of our plod over to arrest Mugabe on that basis then. Unusual thing is first time I've ever found myself in full agreement with Peter Tatchell.

Good point Dan. I admit that this is where the Brits let themselves down. Rather than nod and ignore, we set off to enforce all the laws passed to us, rather than take a more relaxed attitude to it all.
It is about time we realised how people sell their spuds is not important in the grand scheme, and therefore no need to get wound up or to rigerously enforce these laws.
