Dying generation!

My Grandad died this morning aged 86!
He was one of the many belonging to the generation that had to endure the hardships forced on them during the war.
He was born in 1917 and joined the RAF when he was 15 and left when he reached retirement age. His time during the Second World War included nearly 4 years in a Japanese POW camp.
We owe them so much and now they're dying off. It's hard to imagine what they went through. Even the folks left at home, imagine you not hearing from your loved one for 4-5 years?
I nearly didn't go and see him last night as I was knackered. I'm so glad I did now. My point is, if you know someone like that give them some of your time and respect before it's too late. We do owe them something!

We have become a nation that ignores rather than venerates it's elders. I have the utmost respect for anyone who stood up to be shot at, in order to secure our future, and we should all give them the honour they deserve.
It would be interesting to see how the current generation of muggers, shoplifters, junkies and layabouts would behave in a war situation - then again, we may be about to find out!

condolences Nick, my dad died in '98 his sister in '99 and my mum in 2001, they were all of your granddad's generation and seemed like aliens in todays world. I know what they would all think about the forthcoming war in Iraq though
