Anyone got a Playstation 2??

Had mine for a couple of years now and the DVD player has packed in. Its still lets me load games but any DVD then gets put in i get a "Disc read error" message.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I had this .. woulndt play dvds or ps2 games.. ps1 games were fine, fortunately for me it was a week within guarantee and it was replaced.. being positive maybe just a dirty head ??

tried differnet DVD's? its very old school technology for the DVD head, most modern dvd's use later versions of recording/reading, and ps2 will struggle to read them.

Yea, tried about 10 different DVD's some of which were playing in it lst week, its very very annoying.

I have a feeling my foot and the playstation are gonna become very good friends!

Mine's starting to go the same way - what model is yours? mine is a 30003 (on a sticker on the back of the console)...

I found it had to be on a perfectly flat surface to work - any incline and it'd just completely fail to read any dvd...

Mine has always been hit and miss with DVDs at the best of times - resorted to buying a standalone player - and its quieter

Mine has been fine with DVD's. However its becoming increasingly unwilling to read my memory card!! VERY annoying indeed

I remember now, the earlier PS2's had a DVD problem, and the newer ones had a better component. how long you had it?
sell it in the paper, and buy a newer model second hand, make a profit in the process?
saying that a cheap 'real' DVD can be picked up for £50...

Have you tried obscure angles? A mates PS1 would only work at like 30degrees clockwise.

As a veteran of PS2's I'd suggest the following :

1. Try it on it's back.
2. Try it stood on one end (and at off angles 45degrees etc.)
3. Take it to bits and clean it - worked for me. (try not to have 5 screws left at the end though!)
4. clean the tray with damp cloth, suprising how much grime the tray has on it at any one time.
5. Turn it off for an hour then try again.
6. Wait for it to warm up (leave on for 30 mins before having a go)
7. Play something on it that works then 'suprise' it with a DVD.

All these options (and swearing and cursing) have worked for me on various occasions with games. Don't use it for DVD but should be the same issues.

Bottom line though is it ain't a very good DVD player, never has been - especially the earlier models. As we know these consoles are not built to last and seem to have a lifespan of about 2 years of regular use.

Bring on the PS3....

I had a problem with my PS2 which was out of warrenty and rang the Sony Service Centre on 08705 998877
the guys there are very helpfull and they are open from 8am to 10pm.

If its really shagged you can ask them to repair yours which takes about 6 weeks or just get an exchange unit (reconditioned). Both options are the same cost so I would go for the exchange which I have done. Cant remember the cost but I think it is less than £50. If you go the exchange route you should get the newer model. You will need the serial number from the back of the machine before you ring.

One thing they do say is that because of the cooling fan it does get clogged up with dust over time and hoovering out the dust may make a difference.

Mine's always been crap at playing DVDs - pausing, freaking out and generally being crap.

I went out and bought a Sony player - only about a million times better.

I have been using the repacement PS2 to play DVD's and it has been fine apart from not allowing me to select the screen size so it wont play widescreen DVD's in widescreen but I only have a few of those and will be buying a dedicated DVD player when I move the PS2 to my spare bedroom.

I want to get a proper seat with wheel and pedals and will not look good in the lounge
