Hooray for Crucial memory!

In the spirit of giving credit where credit's due, here's a big 
for Crucial Technology, manufactuters & suppliers of computer memory.
I've been having an intermittent problem with my home PC crashing over the last few weeks, which I finally traced to a dodgy memory module yesterday.
E-mailed Crucial & told them what I'd found, and also the fact that its over a year since I purchased said module. Instant reply (on a Sunday!) to send it back for immediate replacement.

I have used Crucial, mainly because they are cheap. They also give a *lifetime* warranty on stuff, and I believe they make about 75% of the 'branded' memory which is usually alot more expensive. The website is excellent, making selection of the right part a piece of cake.
If only more companies where like them.

Have just been able to log on after 4 days of no PC and I see this thread!!!
What a nightmare 4 days I've had!!! I changed my motherboard to a more reliable top end Asus board, changed the PCU from an Athlon 1800+ to Athlon XP 2400+, installed a Radeon 9700pro 128 DDR, AGPx8 graphics card, and finally 2 banks of PC2100 DDR ram at 512 MB each. Installed it all OK, but when I came on to start up the PC, the nightmare began! XP would not load, re-formatted hard drive, tried 98, 2000, XP again,Bought a new copy of XP, in case the one I had was faulty (since took that back and reimbursed), even chaned the PSU to a 400 max unit, in case the power supply wasn't quite enough! all the same results, massive crashes at some point during installation (Am glad I back up work very often!!) After 4 days of trouble shooting, sending the PC off to 'PC professionals', who said that there is nothing wrong with the set up or hardware whatsoever, I found the problem myself. I simply installed the RAM stick (exactly the same as the ones ordered) from my older motherboard, and hey presto, all works fine! I now have a fast PC, albeit without the extra RAM at the moment, but rendering is noticably faster than before. So the moral of this is, don't be too hasty to wipe your hard drive if you encounter a problem, as I did, turned out I simply had 2 bad memory sticks!!! Now, back to updateing all my settings!!
I also have ordered a stick of RAM from crucial and will see if that's OK, all the other stuff I got from Ebuyer.

I'm looking at a similar problem on and old PC that has been flakey ever since being relocated. Are there any good diagnostics out there that can detect this sort of thing? (I found one that looked useful but it hangs at boot time.

Not sure about good diagnostics for PCs, but knowing what I know now, I would have ordered all the PC hardware from Crucial, which has a very helpful compatibility table for motherboards and RAM.
All the older stuff, motherboard, graphics card, PCU etc that I took out of my PC went into our older PC, and all works fine, no probs whatsoever!!
Typical that it's the £600+ hardware I bought to go into the main PC caused me so much trouble!!! All down to memory timing I'm told!!!!
