As Twit said in the Car Junkies thread - reducing congestion is needed but we all disagree on the current plans... thought this could do with a new thread.

I've always been of the opinion that everyone should drive smaller cars. I actually prefer small cars, with big engines of course.

I think it's Tokyo that has a law specifying that cars without paid-for parking have to be less than a certain width. Why not have a maximum size for leisure / commuting cars??

The industry will obviously not go this way themselves - cars get bigger every year (look how they ruined the Golf GTi) - it could only happen through legislation.

Small, lightweight material cars would also cost less to run, potentially cost less to build and create less pollution. Light weight can mean great handling as well. And you can fit more into a traffic jam on the M25

Go on then - anyone out there with a massive car that really needs it (not talking about trade vehicles here)??

How about this for reducing congestion....

If you don't have a garage/off-road parking bay into which your car can be put - you can't have one. And if you convert your fcuking garage into a living room that's one less car you're allowed.

Tough on townies I know...but if they want a car badly enough they can rent a garage...

Discuss. (And I know there are winners and losers to such an arrangement...)

Look, if you want to do it properly, EVERYONE should buy a MCC SMART car. That way we'd get double the number of cars in a given space, and no need for the CC charge. As it happens, we have a Smart car, but could you guys live with one????? takes quite a perception adjustment to driving one.

Hey - that's twice as many cars you can own and fit in the same garage. Works for me....

Now if they hadn't bothered with the turbo 3 cyl engine and software gearbox, and put in a Hayabusa engine and 6 speed sequential....

The - "You Must Be Able To Garage It..." rule would work well with those sodding great 4x4s as well.

"Sorry, sir. You can't have a permit for a Toyota Landcrusier - your permanent parking space isn't large enough. What did you expect, sir? You live in Islington!"

"But you can have three motorbikes or two Smarts or one ordinary car. What did you want?"

Am I on to something, here?

"Yes, sir. You can have a car for weekend use. Hire a lock-up one year lease minimum, show me the certificate, and I'll give you a permit."

I believe this is the law in Japan/Tokyo, but not sure how well it works. The only thing is I reckon it would be impossible to introduce it here now; all you would do is create millionaires overnight amongst those who had land that could be used for parking. Having planning regulations stipulating that all new housing be built with enough off-street parking attached might help though.

I used to commute to work by train when I had the option. I always thought it would be an excellent idea if the cost of my annual season ticket could be added to my tax code therefore giving me tax free travel. The Gov need to offer incentives to the commuters using public transport rather than knocking the motorist.

Not a bad thought IMO...but of course...then you get the rural argument. "I HAVE yo use my car - why can't I have the annual cost of petrol on my tax code..." etc. Basically this would be a bonanza for London(or other city) commuters and no-one else.

Damn straight. What REALLY fcuks me off is this example.

Neighbours down the road purchase property. Smaller than mine - and with a small drive. Parking for two cars ONLY. It HAS a double garage though...

So they convert one garage into a living room! So now...whenever a visitor arrives they park on my property! to55ers.

So eventually I have a word and they no longer park in my parking bay. But a couple of weeks back they have a party...so they park their cheeky-cento in my BIN COLLECTION BAY! They must have needed to pick it up at all four corners to squeeze it in there.

All credit to them - they were trying to leave their car on public land. Errr...although actually it belongs to ME as well! I was laughing so hard I didn't bother having a word this time. Instead I'm going to be putting a sign up in it - cemented into the ground..they won't park there after that!

Slightly off topic - sorry. But if you want to get cars out of towns - this might be a way....

My point below being:

Even if building regs say there must be enough parking for the number of adults expected to live in a house - you would need to extend the granting of planning permission system to include this - otherwise people will kist convert their sodding garages or build on their parking bays.

Absolutely. No point introducing legislation littered with loopholes. Not that our esteemed elected representatives would ever do that.

Sorry to hear about your parking trouble with the neighbours; if you don't get on well with them you could always put up a miniscule warning sign and buy a wheel clamp.

The thing about anything involving parking is it wouldn't address the problem that Ken is aiming at (whether one agrees with how he's done it or not) with the congestion charge, as the biggest problem is on major thoroughfares which generally aren't residential; the problem is mainly sheer weight of traffic.

excuse me !

Firstly, The day some tells me it there opioion that "I" should be driving a smaller car, I'll leave Russia, China and that place they brought the wall down, hear me ?

Last I heard was this was a democracy were living in, if ppl wanna drive mini's, busses or humvees, as long as "they" can affird to run, tax and insure them, thats fine with me.

I also "need" an estate car, cos I DJ so a crappy little super mini just wont do. I suppose the Porsche is smaller that an estate but bigger that a "msart".

The problems were having is nutting to do with thye size of our cars, it has to do with the dickheads who supposedly "traffic manage" our highways, and the sckool runners.

NOw, I used to cycle, walk to school and IF i was lucky and I got a lift to school and that was a treat.
However someone of these "parents" zooming around in ther ofroaders, clogging up the roads is the problem.

And dont give me that bollx that that the streets are anymore unsafer that one I was a kid, back then nasty things were happeneing to kids, only now, cos if instant access to to media and a sheet loda hype, it apperas that the streets are less safe.

Theyve always been pedophiles, rapists and muggers, there hasnt bee a sudden upward trend !

So throw away the little red book chairman Mao, get with the program. I have no problem with your opionions as long as you dont force them to be mine to

Don - somewhat off topic (sorry) but since you mention neighbours' parking tendancies and I recall you've had cause to bemoan the inconsideration of such not so long ago...

...I really can't understand the proles near us; everyone's got perfectly ample drive & garage parking but they all seem to have a complete inability to use them; I know, darling, let's abandon our hateful, spiteful fkucing turdmobile in the middle of the road - one guy even parks his motor not in his garage, not on his drive or even on the road (bad enough, obviously), but instead, deliberately full ON the pavement adjacent to his drive - I mean, why doesn't he just stick a deck chair in the middle of his lawn and perform public urination demos? Totally unimportant and seemingly trivial, I know but it positively ruins an otherwise perfectly decent little spot - WHY?

Dorks - use your on-site car parking/storage facilities!

Again, this is what happens when you take the lower orders out of the field, shave them and give 'em the vote...

Bloody, sodding (northern) peasants!

Our next door neightbour backs out of his two car width drive, then parks on the pavement in front of his house, not half on and half off mind, *on* the pavement!

I shall endeavour to get a pic and shame the 'bastard plumber" that he is.

LOL!!! If you think a smart car is a viable alternative, I suggest you book yourself in for a CAT scan Carl (all that whiplash from the gearchanges could have done some damage you know )

Cheers, Mickey - this is exactly the sort of turdism I'm on about. Probably sits on straw.

A real shocker.

All the traffic 'calming', speed humps, unessecery 1 way systems and 24 hour bus lanes. Scrap the lot and watch the congestion ease, oh you can re-phase the traffic lights and get rid of them of roundabouts as well and take down the speed kills signs while your're at it.

If people with garages choose to park their vehicles on the public road, or worse, and use their garage for living or storage accommodation it seems only reasonable that their property should be revalued to encompass that change of use and that value reflected in Council tax.

I would suggest that each vehicle that could be garaged but isn't is counted as an additional bedroom with ensuit facilities.

There are always alternative ways of skinning cats.
