Had a call from Sky the other day. Apparently they've very kindly given us the decoder box. That is now my property.

Then they try to sell me their insurance policy. If it breaks an engineer will have to come out at £65 an hour. For just £10? a month I can insure against it.

I told him where to get off, but surely I'd have statuatory rights to force them to repair it anyway?

Scumbag sales tactics if you ask me

I was getting at least 1 call a week from people from Sky trying to sell me insurance or channel packages.

In the end I composed an ascerbic email and sent it to the entire board of directors.

Hey presto - no more cold callers.

Drop me a mail if you want the list of email addresses, Ted.

Edit: £65/hr ??? Yoi.. you can buy a new Sky box for that on Ebay..

Also, most faults are likely to be with dish alignment or LNB, which Sky will fix for free whether you own the box or not.

Most modern electrical kit comes with a manufacturer 1 year warrenty anyway.

I had this with a certain high street phone shop. They tried to flog me 3 years warranty for some extortionate cost and I refused to buy it. Anyway the phone broke in the first year of owning it and they got it repaired by Nokia FOC! They even lent me a phone for free.

Can't you get a new one for about £99 (that's the uninstalled price for Freeview I believe)? Just shove yer old card in it.

If you had to replace once a year it's still cheaper than the insurance. Bl**dy rogues!

Hi Ted, I am afraid that is standard Sky Terms. Can't get Freeview, can't get cable so I am stuck with getting a dish. All so I can watch the NASCAR!

My box bust after about 6 months, I rang up Sky and they said the same thing. 50 odd quid call out charge.

I told them they either fix the thing or I cancel my subscrption and they can rot in hell for eternity; they replaced it free of charge, which was nice.

Set of tw@ts they are!!

Shocking...

I cant think who the company would be who are trying this on...

FYI the insurance they are selling is extended warranty i.e. what covers the box after the manufacturers warranty period.

Matt.

I had a quite amazing experience with Sky installers. In brief:

They showed up to install the dish but trees near our house blocked the signal. I left them to it while I went in to make a cup of tea. This was 5pm on a December evening, dark and rainy.

By the time I came out they were busy building a 30 foot disk extension pole to get the dish above the trees. I stopped them doing that. Then they started to install it on my neighbour's house - having planted their ladder right in the middle of their front garden. The final straw was the Kiwi installer coming out the Sky van with a pollarding saw, intending to remove the trees. Now these are well established oak and alder trees and we live in a conservation area.

It then took them 4 months to refund the cost of the box that I had bought.

Grrrr

Jeez, did you lot tick the wrong box (or forget to tick one).

Never had a single problem with them... box died one day, phoned up... replaced it, no problem - even refunded the week of lost viewing...!!!!

Does that mean that you can get NASCAR on freeview?

I've just bought an old ON digital Nokia set. £20, not bad compared to the £100 freeview wnat for a new one.

I had a call last week on this. Some less than impressive lass telling me I could have it insured for £6 a month, £18 a quarter, or £65 a year, saving 2 months. I did ask her how a saving of £7 pounds was two months. She got sh**ty with me. I told her I never sign up for anything over the phone, and send me the details. I got a cr**ply printed document, with the details corrected on the back in biro!

Sgirl did a thread on Sky a month ago.
I posted the trouble I have had with Sky since I went digital. The fcuking thing has gone up the shoot again with exactly the same problem it had before when it took 'Sky' under their insurance agent and service engineers 3 months to fix.
The service engineer company are called 'Service Speed' The first time I dealt with them through the insurance package (which costs me £60 a year), I received neither service nor speed until a Carzee type letter was dispatched to all three companies. I then got service and speed.

The same fault has occured even in the loan box Service Speed left in replacement while they took mine for repair.

It does not take an engineer to work out that from that it probably is not the box that is the problem.
I am beginning to get a little p1ssed off over paying for channels that I want to watch and can't and receiving the holiday sales and auction sites with cartoon network for good measure. The rest simply shows 'No sattelite signal received' but when you go into signal test on such a channel information, the signal strenght and quality are good.

Very soon I may be tempted to site myself just down the road from the exit to 'Sky' studios in Isleworth with cammoflage gear and sit in a bush with a laser gun on my days off so I can at least get some kind of satisfaction/retribution

Madcop, it'll be easier to have a go at the call centre, which incidentally is in your 'manor'!

I had very similar problems to this MadCop and ended up with a new LNB which sorted it.

Til recently...

It appears the LNB is a teeny bit ropey because about once a week I get a "No signal is being recieved" type malarky on some channels. To be honest it was great until the freezing weather started agin which leads me to think the LNB suffers from condensation issues.

Anyway - next time I'm at home for a few days in a row I'll get Sky out to change it again.

Funny you should say about the LNB, as one of the frequent visits by 'service speed' (who now have their own front door key ) replaced the LNB.

When I switch the system on, everything works for about 5 minutes and then gradually, the picture squares and freezes and the sound starts to make loud high pitched squeaks, then it goes to 'No satellite signal received'.

If I turn the power to the unit off and go through the reset procedure, I get another 5 minutes or so with everything working fine until the same thing happens.

Any suggestions on that problem would be received gratefully!

sounds like the coax cable is breaking down..

Powering off the box &/or disconnecting the coax into the box allows stored charge (capacitance) to be discharged, clearing the signal path.

As soon as you start to use the box, the charge builds up again. My approach would be to replace the LNB again as we had the exact same problem and it was that the 1st LNB broke down and they replaced it with another dodgy one. If that doesn't work then it's time to replace the coax cabling.
