My 11-year-old's PS2 is freezing as he tries to load the games. Any ideas as to possible causes? It's not been dropped or anything (or so he tells me - if it has I'll drop him). The leads are fine - verified by his mate bringing round his lead for a swap - the fan is working so no overheating etc,

It just says loading etc and then that's it - reset or whatever it is does no good.

Anyone had experiences like this and found the cause? We've left it turned off for a day and no joy.

Dixons don't want to know of course, (14 months old) and the online PS2 helpthingy suggested we swap it for another one with them for about £100 or so.

Any help appreciated.

Is it always the same game/DVD or do you get the problem with ALL of them?

I had a similar problem with my PS1 which was caused by the little track that the laser runs up and down on being worn - cure was to stand the thing on it's side!

May be worth trying a different orientation?

I think there are some config options available if you switch it on with no Disc, could be worth checking these?

This happened with mine - only with one game though (GT3 - noooo!) Anyway - it turned out that the disk itself just needed a damn good clean. At the risk of sounding a bit daft - have you tried this?

Cheers

useful info here

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=29893&f=23&h=0

basically though, give it a clean - head cleaner + hoover the vents if you're not too technical. Otherwise if you like getting your hands dirty whip it to bits and clean it out.

Have you checked lots of games - some games often have a higher 'tolerance' than others. i.e. my copy of ISS pro EVO2 (6 months old and spotless disc) has more trouble loading than pro EVO1 (2 years old and scratched to hell)

best of luck...

Thanks for the input guys but ...

ALL games freeze ... and have hoovered out the vents etc. Some freeze at different points ie WWF Smackdown Shut Your Mouth freezes at a different point to LMA Manager etc.

Does it play DVD films?

Have you tried it with a different controller & with all memory cards etc removed?

Has he surreptitiously had it 'chipped'?

Is it actually an XBox?

Haven't tried a DVD film - but will tonight before I throw it at the wall - have used both controllers and it has no memory card in it at present.

He knows far more than me about wiring it up :what to press etc - so questions of that nature are met with and a lot of ing before I get

Thanks again to all.

Thats an interesting one.
At xmas we bought one for my bros girlfriends nephew, and tested it before xmas day.
It did exactly the same as yours, ie; it wouldnt load or play any games.
Had a look at the controller(nosey i am) and noticed that there was a connection missing inside it.
Anyway, took it back got a new one, checked the controller, this time it DID have the connection and it all loaded fine, musta been a faulty one.
My advise is to have a look at the controller connection and check to see if its clear, that its not obstructed with fluff etc.
Hope this helps.

Ps2(fnar) er, the same fault with that one i had, would play cds but no games. Check the controller connection.

The above is a 40-year-old's (me) interpretation of a 11-year-old saying thanks - cos we did as was suggested, put it on it's side and the b@st@rd worked - "PHeads saves us money darling" I crowed to the missus ...

Peace reigns in our house.

Thanks again ...
