Registration transfers

Morning,

I just got my certificate of entitlement through on a 'cherished' plate and was wondering, has anyone applied for the transfer in person. I'd like to get the plate on the car for PH5 but if I send it off it's not likely to happen so I was going to show up at the local DVLA offices in the hope of getting it done there and then...

You are Dreamin!

Your local DVLA office are only able to see cars at certain times and on certain days, and even then you need an appointment.

In my experience they are the most unhelpful bunch of barstewards you are likely to come accross.

Apologies for the rant, but as you can guess I had a bad experience with them.

I turned up at our local office in Preston, stood in a queue for 1/2 hour and walked out with my new plate on the car. Simple as that!

My expereince was the opposite. - Went to DVLA office in Sheffield, filled the form in, left same day with transfer complete and stuck the plates on the car. - you will need the certificate, your log book and your MOT.

I thought that once you had the 'certificate' - V778 Retention document you could apply to assign it to your vehicle - they dont inspect all vehicles!

when you purchased the plate did you fill out the paperwork to have it assigned to your vehicle or placed on retention/

try your local DVLA Office you can get the ball rolling with them quite quickly - paerwork completed etc, take your V5 in with you, MOT if applicable, Tax disc and cheque book (although IIRC if plate is on retention the assignment fee is already paid) DVLA should photcopy the documents and start the process quite quickly and should only take a couple of weeks if they dont want to inspect the vehicle.

Seems to vary a bit from the standard two weeks to the instant to the 'you'll never see the plate on your car'. I know which I'd prefer!

I don't know whether it makes a difference but all the transfer fees are paid as I purchased at a DVLA auction so theoretically all I would need to do is turn up with the docs and hope I get a helpful member of staff. If I do get a helpful member of staff I shall go straight from there to buy a lottery ticket...

Provided you are not taking a plate off of the car your new plate is going onto and the vehicle is taxed and MOT'd it's easy.

Turn up at local DVLA office with.

- Log Book.
- Tax Disc.
- Certificate of Entitlement for the Number Plate.
- MOT.

You do not need your certificate of insurance unless you are retaxing the vehicle, having said that if you have it to hand take it with you just incase they've changed the rules.

Hand the bundle in and a nice pretty girl will hand you a new tax disc in about 3 minutes. At this point you can put your new plates on and the new log book should arrive in about 21 days.

Useful information Daz, thanks. How does the process differ if there is already a plate on the car that needs to be transferred?

Hi Jeremy.

If your car has a plate to come off this delays the process because you have to take the plate off, wait for the new log book and then go to DVLA again to put the new plate on in the manner as outlined above with the new log book.

Thanks for the info... The car I have is already registered but I don't care what happens to that plate as it just the number given at registration. So in effect am I in the 'not taking a plate off' catagory...

done this 10-15 times and assuming you take old tax disk, V5, retention certificate to the DVLA office it will be done on the spot - although not before about 10 in the morning or after 3.

Car is not normally inspected only had this once in all of the times I have swapped my number over.

Listen to Daz - I just did mine this morning pretty much exactly as he's described. Took 5 mins and was easy peasy. Note that the queues are long at the moment because of all the new registrations for March. Don't turn up at a lunchtime otherwise you could stand in a queue for an hour. I was lucky, but others weren't.

no you can do both at the same time, if you want the other plate on retention then this can all be done as a single transaction.

Fully agree with Ben. Although I have only transferred plates twice, both times I turned up at the VLO the transfer went without a hitch. I think that vehicle inspections are carried out when there is a query against the recipient vehicle (or donor vehicle). Still, worth checking with DVLC (they have a reasonable web site) as taxation/log book rules have recently changed.

Its a doddle. I've done it a few times, just turn up as the others have said join the queue with all the paperwork and you're sorted.

I think I was wrong with this bit and Bennno is spot on. My problem with doing this was caused by my new car being registerred for the first time and I think the OPC (supplying dealer) were a bit reluctant to get involved with personalised plates other than when you have the plate already on a retention certificate rather than on a donor vehicle.

The rest of what I said I still stand by.

Reg transfer done with no issues...

Apart from queing for 2 hours outside and I got there at 11 to avoid the lunchtime rush. What I hadn't counted on was only 2 counters being open.

Thanks for the help, whoever said certificate of entitlement, V5, MOT and tax disc were spot on. Done there and then.

I now have D41 CAP on the car!
