Advice please... which estate?

Yep. you're right... unfortunately, I have to live in this thing called reality... means I have to spend the next 5 years doing 20,000 miles per annum in a diesel. I know its a dull choice to have to make, but that's kind of the reason I'm asking on here... cant be @rsed deciding myself!
What about.....
Alfa romeo 156 JTS or JTD sportswagon
3 series touring (only a crappy 1.6 for just over 20K i'm afraid).
Citroen C5 2.0 HDI estate (absolutely huge, and loaded and costs next to nothing).
Mazda 6 estate meant to be very good handling with some rave reviews recently.
Renault Laguna sport tourer (estate to you and me).
Volvo V40.
Some very good and fancy cars there to choose from, all available for well under 19k so opportunity to add a few extras.
My choice, Alfa if space isn't prime concern but style and pace is, C5 if space is the main consideration.

I specifically didn't mention the Alfa, as it isn't any bigger than a golf (whatever alfa romeo believes).
The boot of the sportwagen with the load cover in place, is the same as my 306 hatch!

Loudpedal - bought a Focus TDCI a year ago for similar reasons and really very pleased with it. The boot capacity is actually only just smaller than the Mondeo (half a cubic foot IIRC) and the engine is a little beauty particularly when hoofed on the M'way 
Have done 3-4 hour jaunts with 2 adults in the back with no complaints at all. Sure it's not a sports car but that's not why I bought it but then not many sportscars can get 50 mpg! At the time Ford were trying to promote it so got a whole host of goodies like disks on the rear, 6 disk cd, metallic etc.
I think that Van Aaken do a plug in black box that bumps up the hp nicely and the torque (more important if you ask me) rockets.
Have a test drive see what you think and all for 14k. Marvellous.

I agree, drove one a few years back and the JTD engine was good, nice interior but boot was pretty poor. My wifes golf est Company Car was bigger.
But if space isn't the biggest priority it could be a consideration, IMHO if space is the seller then you can't beat a C5, they are HUGE!! Well kitted out and pretty cheap, also I think Citroen extended their VAT back scheme, but even if its not running anymore there are always handsome discounts to be had at Citroen dealers. (Not that I'm pro Citroen or anything).

Ye gods ! That 456 GTA estate's horrendous, Citroen XM rear door glass is a particularly nice touch. Still, good to know its designer found work afterwards:

I think Omegas are out of the price bracket tho... start at 22k or thereabouts...
