Your best bet is sponsored links on Google. Getting good hits any other way is tricky. You need:

- Meta Keyword tags that actually reflect the content of each page
- Lots of links between pages of the site
- Lots of links to the site from other sites

Google won't index you unless there are some links to your site elsewhere. I'd be wary of the companies offering "great results on over 100,000 search engines" because, as far as I can see, there's no way of guaranteeing good hits unless you pay the search engine direct.

Unless anyone else knows different???!

Just literally today signed a contract with a company in London to promote four of our web sites across Europe. Pretty good deal, and they will guarantee first page listings, or you don't pay.

What sort of business are you in? Search engines aren't the be all and end all of succeeding on the web.

There are some other means you can employ depending on your audience.

It's Computer Telephony Intergration, very specific telecoms company.

Any suggestions gratefully welcome!

You're right - quite specific.

Be sure to include a newsletter facility on your website. If/when people find your site it's important to try and stay in contact with them.

I'd agree with Ted, there is more to traffic than just search engines.

Basic search engine stuff is getting your tags right (not to many not repeated etc, etc). Get your site content right so it reflects the tags.
Get it submitted.

Then look at your traffic, see where it's coming from, what searches are finding your site and how people behave when they are there. If you track their path through the site you can ensure that you drive them to the content you want them to see, be it text, product or whatever.

Be wary of anyone guaranteeing you a high listing on a search engine. A high listing on search engine with crap search criteria is a waste of time.

For instance stick the words 'internet engineers' into a google search, you'll find our company igentics is about 3rd in the world, very cool but who searches for internet engineers? Nobody!
Now put in 'e-commerce solutions uk', you'll find us on about page 5, again not very handy.
Now try 'e-commerce solutions cambridge uk' great here we are at number 3 or something, fantastic IF someone puts that criteria in.

Google adwords are a cheap effective way to get noticed, again pick your criteria well.

Also have email newsletter, tell a friend, other simple things to try to give people a reason to go to the site and keep coming back.

If you want a free 5 minute review of how search engine friendly your site is drop me an email.

Cheers

D.

I did not bother with search engines for my site, i just got a list of potential clients and emailed and snail mailed there repestive departments.

While doing this mailing i offered them some sort of insentive to get them to look at the site and sign up for the news letter.

While this cost 200 first clase stamps and a weekeneds worth of work. I Standard letter to all the companys, as well as this letter being sent by email to a few email addresses at the company, managed to turn get me a few contract to last me 2 years or so.

Now the site is getting 50 or so hits a day from clients to check on progress of there projects. (offer daily/weekly progress reports on there project.) Not much by teds standards but i only get hits to the site that are essential to the business and keep the bandwidth cost down.

Cheers
