LHD Premium?

Just wondering if a LHD car costs more to insure than a RHD one?

Anyone know whether it adds much to the insurance premium?

Not really sure but I know someone who has a left hand drive 106 Gti. His insurers weren't bothered about it being LHD. I'll try to find out the name of the company on Monday.

Can't see that it does. My Trans Am costs £350 fully comp which is not bad for 6.6 V8! Probably get the best prices from a specialist rather than from Direct Line etc.

So, let me get this straight... There is no premium for a left hand drive car which is difficult to drive on the smaller roads, especially overtaking! And if you upgrade your brakes it costs you more!!! FFS your improving safety.

Its crazy! Damn insurance companies!!!

There is usually a premium for LHD if the vehicle is available in RHD. A friends TT quote was £850RHD / £1000LHD. The reasons usually quoted being impared visibilty and parts issues.
It does not really apply to US imports (Corvettes / Mustangs etc) as they are pretty much LHD only.
I agree with trying the specialists, but don't forget the likes of Tesco and NU direct.

I'm not quite sure if I was charged an additional premium for my car being LHD ('94 Porsche 993) but when I was looking for quotes, one or two insurance companies wouldn't even quote for it.

That said, Tesco didn't even blink twice and I went with them as a result.

I used to work for a major national insurance broker.
There is no hard and fast rule - some quote, some don't, some load, some don't. Golden rule is to spend as much time as you can afford shopping around.
