National 50mph speed limit

Have you noticed any new 50mph speed limits springing up your area?
I have heard that this is part of a scheme to bring in a national 50mph limit by stealth.
Having a sudden blanket 50mph limit would result in an outcry, but bringing it in bit by bit would not be so noticable.

A few areas around Notts have changed overnight to 40 limits. Some of them on my favourite stretches of road.
I would love to find meet the people/persons who pass these new limits. How can they do it without consultation?
I pay road tax / VAT on petrol etc and I use the road so why the fk was I not consulted!!!?
Surely councils cant just change limits, or can they?

Blanket limits of 40 and 50 on perfectly straight/wide section of rural single carriageway popping up all over.

Numpties keep a constant 40 through 30's/20's then same on straight wide roads. Perhaps so they dont have to think.

Wouldn't suprise me in the least.

I used to be quite good at following speedlimits (read some of my earlier posts!) but these days I really can see they're purely arbitary, even for a brake-less old banger like mine, so I just follow the prevailing traffic.

I use my common sense to determine a limit.

yep prime example near me, they dropped the limit down to 50 'cos theres a set of bends that get tricky if you try taking them above 90...

also, they slapped a speed camera there right when you come off the new bypass (70 limit) into the 50 zone...

QUite correct - this is what to do. When you are asked to vote...ask where they stand on local issues important to you. If there a fcuking stupid speed limit been introduced ask 'em if they'll work to get it changed...and if they don't...tell 'em sorry - I'm not voting for you...


You have to hit these idiots where it hurts - the ballot box. Remember politicians get paid to do what they do. Even your (UNPAID) councillors get expenses (I've more sympathy for them - even if most are numpties). Make them do something for the money!

Just drove back from the Devil's Punch Bowl in Surrey to Basingstoke via Alton and some B-roads. It is astonishing at how many rural roads now have a 40 (yes...FORTY!) mph limit. In many places this was so blantantly unjustified that every driving sense in my body was screaming to go faster - and it was all I could do to keep to the limit. I noticed that many drivers seemed not to bother to slow down when entering the 30mph limits after..

When a limit is THAT idiotic it is bleedin' unsafe as where the 30mph limits were they were genuinely required.

If the traffic planners keep "crying wolf" and introducing bollocks limits its just going to backfire as people lose respect for ALL limits...even the justified and necessary ones.

From all the comments above it highlights an interesting point - if a road is a 40mph limit (or even 50) people in general pay less attention to the 30 limits. Or in some case dont even notice.

Doesn't really change all that much.
I mean its not like I take the blindest bit of notice to the current limits so what makes them think I'll give the time of day to the new ones.

The main point here is they can now screw god knows how many folk with mobile scameras.
Picture the scene. Mr ImallrightattheNSL comes along at 60 thinking he's ok and WHAM gets done by a mobile trap. kerrchiing

It just confirms what I have said before.

Take a given stretch of road with a NSL.

Some lentilist decides that the limit should be lowered to, say, 40mph. He/she/it argues that "speed kills", traffic flows better at lower speeds, less accidents etc etc dribble dribble

Someone then comes along as says "hang on a minute, I think the NSL should stand, we dont need a lower limit".

What can be argued in favour of keeping the limit? Not a lot when they are armed with the good old "lower limit = less accidents" and the rest of this crap.

What a coincidence. I was thinking of those roads, the B3001 is particularly ridiculous blanket 40 and 30's reaching 2 or 3 miles out of villages.

its not that new, been up since before christmas - on the A6 just before the new clapham bypass (milton ernest end)... incidently it was put up before the road even opened

hmm, never seen a mobile camera on the A14 (possibly the most boring stretch of road ever) but i do know where both fixed truvelos are...

I was wondering if you lot agree with me, in regards that when going from a 40mph limit to a 30mph limit, you just ease off the gas, before reaching the 30mph limit sign, and, if you're lucky, MIGHT change down a gear. Hence you don't brake...but when going from a 50mph or national speed limit to 30mph, you DO brake AND DO change into the right gear for 30mph ? I think that going from a 40 to 30 limit, your mindeset can still be in the 40 limit driving stylee and because you just eased off the gas, it so easy to add a few hundred revs and creep your speed up above 30mph ?
Perhaps people introducing new road limits should bare this in mind

The 50 limit down here in Dorset is getting worse, the limit seems to be extending further and further out of town. They seem to have extended it on the road into Bournemouth and on the outskirts of Poole, and FFS why is there a need for 5 Fixed and the Talivan (old mini gatso) in what must be 2 miles of road!!!

months ago i seem to remember reading that they advised a max speed of 50 on all A roads

40 on all B roads.

since the numpties got hold of this theyve been howling in rage to the local council to reduce the limit through their village/hamlet/whole road to 40 or 50.

Generally most [good] drivers will slow down and anticipate the 30 limit.

You are right about the braking also. If I am on a stretch of NSL I am probably doing a little bit more than 60. Same with 50 limits on motorways - becasue you are driving quickly you observe the change and believe the lower limit is there for a reason and hence slow down.
