Just need a 5 door pratical hatch (leon cupra)

Just to be prudent ring up the 'New Union' to get a quote.

Sorry Sir can't give you a quote without a registration number!!!!!

I just find a reg on a similiar car on the road or off a car in auto trader.. I can scam them just as easy as they can me..

It really isn't worth argueing with TeleSales Numpties, best thing to do in this situation would be to just make up a private plate, just tell them it's ABC 1 or something

My point is, the OTHER insurance companies don't need a registration number to give you a quote.

I'll obviously be forced to go to there competition, plus on general principal.....

I think its because they look up the reg plate on some central database and it saves them asking all the other questions, such as make, model, engine size etc.

Probely new policy not to do things the long way to save on their phone bill (and in the process £££'s worth of business)

Or mine, when I was phoning to find out about insuring the Porshce. It went something like this:

What car is it
- A porsche
-911 or Boxster
-Neither. Its a 944.
-I'll put it as a Boxster then..

Another company:

-Its a Porsche
-2 Door or 4 door
-errr. Its a Porsche. 2 door
- Petrol or Diesel
-Its a Porshce
-Yes,but is it Petrol or Diesel?
-Its Petrol. 2 door Porshce 944

Why do they employ such people? And who the hell wrote their database???

On the subject of automotive ignorance amongst tele-insurance people, whilst arranging additional Europe-wide cover for my Elise:-

Them: OK, so it's a Lotus Elise, 2 door convertible. Will you be taking a caravan?

Me: Erm..., no.

The quote systems these companies use is idiot proof unfortunately this is who they get to use them.

They have a screen with lots of gaps in it just like the online stuff. You answer question they fill in gaps. anything outside of this they will not be able to help as they are not underwriters. Thats why they cant quote for a car with modifications.

They should be ablt to quote without the reg number, its just that buy putting in the number they get all of the cars info without having to ask make, model, cc etc its like giving them your post code and they know which road you live at.

If you think you are having problems take a look at the MK1 Cortina Pickup in my profile under previous cars. "thats funny sir we dont have a mk1 Cortina Pickup listed" "oh thats because Ford never built one". The conversations would start to get weird when I get to things like the chromed beer barrel petrol tank

It's the "that's not on my list therefore it doesn't exist" mentality that gets me. I live in a flat which was only recently converted, so the postcode is not on a lot of the search engines. Apparently the fact that the search can't find it means that I must not know where I live. Arses.

there is a reason - when we phoned up to arrange insurance for the T5, they quoted one figure, and then when we had the reg number, they wanted an additional £150, denying all knowledge of the previous quote!

Were you buying new - unregistered new or new to you ? I had the same problem when insuring my Chimp and Mundaneo (both unregistered) with Privilege. Guy asks me for a reg num. I don't have one it's brand new. Sorry can't give you a quote. What ? You don't insure new cars then ? No, we do but we need the reg no. How can I give you the reg no ? The car doesn't exist yet. It's a pile of sheet metal in a warehouse in Stuggart (or wherever they build Mundaneo's now). Eventually the guy asks his supervisor and come back and says he can do it without the reg no aslong as I'm sure of the exact spec of the car . Morons the lot of them...
