"Word of mouth" report has been generated- scam???

I have just had a strange e-mail sent to my "other" e-mail address.

It's from "[e-mail]"

and said that a report has been filed against my e-mail address.

What is this???

I think its a scam, as there is then a link to say "to remove from this website go here..." (and therefore validate my e-mail)

They also say that they are required by law to inform me if a report has been generated about the person (ie me). Whos law?? Which country???

I have noticed that recently I have been getting more annoying viagra-style e-mials in the inbox, but this???

Has anyone else had experience with this?

How did you perform the domain lookup, Smifffy? Is it a utility or a standard function such as tracert?

To get the details one easy way is to goto uk2.net and use the domain checker. Type in the domain then click details and it will give you all relevant info.

My wife (Cosmic) got an email a while back saying that her eBay shop was in violation of copyright over some images and that another eBay user had made the complaint. Naturally she emailed them and they basically said " wasn't me".
Then she got a couple of emails from people asking why she had complained about them (which she obviously hadn't).

To this day we can't work out what the scam was and can only put it down to a sick joke or troll.

Generally, treat all unsoliticted emails as suspect and research their contents at a web site like www.hoaxbuster.net to see if it is a hoax or scam.

Yep, I use the demon tools for my lookups.

The rule of thumb I use is that anything I don't recognise in my inbox is SPAM. If I'm not 100% sure I do seperate research. NEVER, EVER reply to the email or click on a web link in it. All that does is confirm your address to a spammer so they can add it to the list that they will then sell to other spammers.

Also, always treat the senders address with a great deal of scepticism. Most of them are faked. Try using the "view detailed headers" or similar option in your mail program and you can check sender against the sending machine etc.

Also, anything that says that they have to notify you "by law" is unlikely to be true, Especially as most of these things are American. the Yanks have very few data protection laws and they ones they do have don't apply to anyone outside the US.
