Are you in SO much of a hurry?

My flat is at the side of a busy road in Windsor. About 15 yards before a set of lights at a T junction is a very visible pelican crossing; it even has a different colouring to the road.
Now, about 90%+ of motorist goign by treat this as "their" space and will happily pull their motor on top whilst waiting for the lights at the junction. If I attempt to cross the road and cast them a stare they seem outraged! For the most of the time if they left the bloody crossing empty I would be able to cross without recourse to pressing the button. As the lights are red at the T junction they gain absolutely zilch by occupying the crossing but I suppose the numpty mentality is "well, I'm 15 feet nearer now".
Another case of people not being aware of their surroundings whilst in control of a vehicle.
