Why aren't cyclists registered / insured?

Saturday night, some t
t rides his bike into the side of our 8 seater. No lights, no high viz, going the wrong way round a roundabout. Smacks his bike into the sliding door.
Gives a false name and address.
Took the bus into the bodyshop today and it needs a new sliding door - £600.
I want to remove thes face 
That £600 either comes out of the drivers pocket (who has done nothing wrong), out of mine, or out of my insurers pocket (and then of course, ultimately - out of mine).
I get that people will forever be lying scumbags but why should theis group of road users be completely untraceable?

Because, generally speaking, If you get hit by a car you wouldn't ps off into nowhere... Or do quite as much damage.drivers never do hit and runs, and bicyles weigh more than cars.

Recently had two teenage lads on a tandem (random) ride into the back of my car at a fair rate - I don't think the brakes were up to the job of stopping the weight of two fairly tall lads going downhill. "Here we go" thought I, "I'll have trouble getting these guys to pay up for any damage", but I shouldn't have worried - front wheel and fork completely written off on the tandem, for one small black rubber mark on my rear bumper.

You mean like having say your post code stamped on it for example? Doesn't ever work. Cycle theft isn't considered a criminal offence by most Police officers I have delt with. I have had seven bikes stolen in the last ten years ranging from £1000 to £3000. No bikes have ever been recovered. The Police only ever visited me to take a statement when my front door was kicked in to take my bike from my kitchen. After the third bike was taken the houshold insurance said they could no longer cover them. If someone took a £1000 car they'd have a county wide hunt backed up nation wide ANPR and a
Helicopter if the car was spotted. A £1000 bike you get a crime number over the phone and leaflet about being a victim of crime in the post if you're lucky. I hope I catch the next cycle thief who dares cross my path. I will happilly take the law into my own hands as it obviously isn't safe in the hands of the Police.
