How can a country this poor afford to do this, it's a one party state and has been since the civil war, so effectively a dictatorship backed up by the military, I remember the news items showing 14 year olds with AK47's

Who's next Haiti ?

Massive investment in a new airport and infrastructure by the Qataris who want to make it a hub. I think there's a hydro plant too, and they want the F1 circuit to be part of the new airport development.

I doubt that F1 would risk going there without significant confidence at every practical level.

I don’t know much about Rwanda, but a couple of years ago I was at a lunch with some British, Canadian and South African business people, who were opening offices and a manufacturing plant there, and speaking very positively about the country, the opportunities and the new political stability.

Apparently it is one of Africa’s fastest-growing and best organised economies, and Kigali is clean and safe with a modern infrastructure, and a growing business and conference hub.

This was when the Tories had negotiated the scheme to send illegal immigrants there, as they needed to boost the younger working population.
Seems unfortunate that petty politics blocked that, as it may have some merit.

It's on track to achieve middle income status by 2035 and high-income by 2050.

The World Bank ranks countries in terms of their overall economic attractiveness and business readines of 50 countries. Rwanda is ranked 13th.

Most people's view of Africa is homogenous and perceived to be a continent of poverty, famine and civil war. Without doubt, there remains a lot of that but it masks a hidden reality of astounding development and growth in many places. Ethiopia, Guinea, Uganda, Tanzania and others are currently growing at a rate faster than many western nations and not just economic growth. Political and structural reform is making these places increasingly stable.

Whereas the U.K. is probably headed in the opposite direction in a similar timescale! Anyway enough politics…

…personally I’d love to see Kyalami make a return. I’d go to that. Flights from Uk not too expensive and same time zone

There a few countries on the calendar who are very wealthy but have very unsavoury regimes, you could even say they were dictatorships backed up by the military.....

Exactly, it's a bit late to be a bit precious about unsavoury regimes! That ship has long sailed.

Rwanda has made incredible progress since the war. The president has stabilised the country, tried to rebuild through higher value exports (coffee I think), tourism, etc.

They appear to now have a stable government and there’s a lot of foreign direct investment there. They’re also blessed with some absolutely wonderful scenery.

F1 should absolutely have a race in Africa, and if this proposal is workable then go for it. They need to make some overtaking oppportunities in the track layout though,

If they are going to Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and the like, even Amercia with an inherent dictator in charge, there is no issue going to Rwanda, F1 needs to be in Africa, and proper Afirca now South Africa, the only issue is it looks like Qatari money is behind it which sort of ruins it a bit

Some countries are one party, different politics and societies around the world exist. F1 is global. F1 is interested in a world tour, it's not interested in fixing or even having an opinion about where it visits. You benefitted from a news company going there to make content. You learned something. Now F1 goes there too.

Affordability has to include investment. Sometimes it makes sense for the entity that has little, to invest a lot.

If you're worried about they young men holding AK's, it's not a bad idea to import a sport where they will see young ladies holding spanners and getting to work.

Rwanda is a world away from Haiti. It is a low-income developing country, though it is widely recognized for having one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa, and it is stable (even by Africa standards)

Looks like it's been confirmed with a 10 year deal starting next decade.

My wife used to live in Rwanda and has wanted me to go for years, my son will be old enough when the race is on so we will have to take him hehe

BBC says they want to stay at 24 races so which track is it replacing? Or are we going to have more alternate year races like Spa? For liberty alternate years probably works better as it increases ticket demand in that country meaning circuits can charge more as there isn't one the following year.

Hopefully Miami, I like Cota and would love to go, and Vegas actually has decent races you just have to ignore all the race build up and turn it on as they start the formation lap.

My colleague who has worked there was blown away by the country, the hospitality, landscape, etc

Ewan McGregor went the in "Long Way Down" and even met the president.

  • Free visas (for UK and others)
  • Gorilla Trekking (must be booked), Safari, Kigali, Lake Kivu
  • No vapes, drugs (well, illegal and heavy penalties)
  • Compulsory military service involves tidying areas
  • Low crime
Kigali is widely considered one of the safest and cleanest capital cities in Africa/ low rates of violent crime and a lot of police

"Umuganda: On the last Saturday of every month, the entire country participates in Umuganda—a mandatory community service day where businesses close and residents clean streets, clear brush, and repair public infrastructure from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM" and "Strict Anti-Littering Laws: The city enforces strong regulations against littering, backed by fines, community service".

Though currently FCDO advises against all but essential travel to parts of Rwanda (i.e. anything near the DRC border)

I think I'm talking myself into a trip...
