see and hear a lot of the VAG fart arounD London and Luton ...what actually causes this ? Is it TC or rev limiter ? Sounds utter pants either way IMHO....

The ECU backs off the fueling/timing to stop the gearbox lunching itself on changing gear, this causes the farting noise.

vag farts usually happen after you get a bit too vigourous and trap some air up there, slow down a bit.

It's the ignition cut when the DSG changes gears, I think. Fuel is injected but the spark is retarded, and the fuel 'pops' in an uninspiring fashion in the hot exhaust.

Pretty much all DSG box cars do it, not just VAG.

I saw a M4 going up Lymington high street , the weekend just gone and the farting and crackles and pops sound so over engineered, it was barely moving faster than the flow yet gave the impression it was being worked hard.

Cringefest.

My 340i makes a similar noise, not quite as loud as my mates Golf R (with a Remus) but still makes the noise. It doesn't really do it on full chat though, you have to change up at about 4k on part throttle, thinking about it, it's more of a crackle than a fart. It also makes the burbles and stuff listed above, it's nice with the MPPSK though because a flick of the switch and it's quite with the valves shut.

I like the sound tbh, each to their own though.

Make the same noise too when the TC kicks in.

Mine doesn’t do it that much as I had the dsg ECU mapped to make it change quicker so it makes more of a pop than a fart (more like a quieter version of a btcc car)

Increasingly seems to appeal to a certain type of urban 'driver' mainly those from inner city Chavland with no more than 2 brain cells who values fake stty sound over substance.

fking irritating regards.

My Cupra was the same, APR Stage2 with TCU flash as well, it popped rather than farted.

Porsche doesn't do it.

MINI John Cooper Works with the switchable exhaust valve do it in the open state. More 'pops and bangs' than a fart though.

The favorite on that scene round here is super loud gunshots, most often from the back of a 2.5 Focus ST.

My carburated XR3 did it, only because the exhaust manifold was leaking. Not sure why any fuel injected road car would do it, unless programmed to.

Deliberately mapped that way for show innit? I don't suppose there for a practical purpose.

Mine does it,, but only when driven in manual mode with approx 60% throttle. Doesn't do it at all in drive when either driven normally or flat out.

I personally don't mind it.

I have more than 2 brain cells.
I am not a chav or whatever you want to call people nowadays.

I’m pretty sure if you took the cats and silencers off any modern car it would do that poppping sound although I appreciate we’ve gone off topic from the op’s question.

It’s down to the pulsed air system which bleeds air into the exhaust as part of the emissions system. Helps keep the cats hot and clean, put simplistically.

It’s part valve via ecu control and part air box / exhaust plumbing.

In modern motorbikes the first thing you do when you put a performance exhaust on is disable and block what most people call the PAIR (pulsed air) system because all it does is make the exhaust hotter than normal and make those silly bangs, which are much more evident without cats and restrictive silencers.

Therefore what people think makes their car sound badass is actually the sound of inefficiency. Although removing the PAIR system doesn’t itself have any performance benefits besides reducing exhaust heat.

If you run cats you still need the pulsed air so that they don’t get blocked, which is I suppose besides the perceived cool sound, why people do it.

Pretty sure that’s not the same as what the op is referring to.
