Sorry for your loss

The car is still taxed and road legal however you need to speak to her insurance company asap as technically the insurance is now invalid as the policy holder ( the insured ) is now deceased

They may allow you to transfer the policy over or more likely require a new one

Thanks, I live in Spain and was hoping to put a temp cover on it. I think it will be easier to hire a car while in the UK for a week.

As per Earthdweller, speak to the current insurance provider as they may transfer the insurance to you or be able to add you as a named driver for a period of time.

As above, sorry to hear of your loss

Yes, this is what happened with both my parents cars when they died. On my dad's car I wasn't a named driver but they just added me to the policy with a note on it of the circumstances, no charge. If I recall there was only a few weeks left on the policy so they didn't apply any sort of time limit and I sold it during that period.

I was already a named driver on my mum's car a few years later so the insurers just added it as a note and for all correspondence to then come to me (was also executor).

In both experiences they were really good with it, I imagine they deal with it a lot so they have a process etc already set up.

The house insurance on the other hand via John Lewis were a bloody nightmare after my mum died. Seemed to totally flummox them and they very quickly started bleating about more money needed as the house would be empty etc etc. Lovely.

Same ..... A quick call and I was added to the policy for free whilst I decided how to dispose of the car. Couldn't have been easier. I suppose when you use the "Bereavement" word , people sit up and become sensible.

Rather grim topic but can the named driver / spouse use the deceased’s vehicle until Official arrangements are made?

Yes. Think there's an ABI ruling on this, that they have to provide cover for named drivers, I think for 6 months, or the next renewal, whichever comes first. Something like that anyway. You aren't expected to pull the sheet over the deceased's face and think "I must call the motor insurers".

My condolences on your loss.

There could be a problem if you've exchanged your UK driving licence for a Spanish one. I had the same problem in the same circumstances when my mother died - they were unable to add me as I no longer had a UK licence.
