I’m sure it’s been asked previously, but any advice appreciated.
A van has been parked at the side of the road, where I live. It’s not moved for a few weeks.
Have just checked & the MOT expired in March & it’s registered as SORN.
I & the neighbours don’t know who owns it.
Am I right in thinking it shouldn’t be parked up on the road? It’s a pain where it’s parked. What’s the best steps to report it to get it moved?
Thanks

You are correct, a SORNed vehicle is not allowed on the public road. No idea how you report it though, I guess give your local police station a ring and ask them?

It's in the name. Statutory OFF ROAD Notification.

The govt website:

You need to make a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) when you take a vehicle ‘off the road’ and you want to stop taxing and insuring it.

Your vehicle is off the road if you do not keep or use it on a public road, for example if it’s in a garage, on a drive or on private land.

You must make a SORN in any of the following situations:

-your vehicle is not taxed
-your vehicle is not insured (even for a short time, for example because there’s a delay renewing your policy)
-you want to break a vehicle down for parts before you scrap it
-you buy or receive a vehicle and want to keep it off the road (you cannot transfer a SORN from the previous keeper)

If it's a nuisance then I'd report it. If it's parked neatly, I'd just leave it.

SORN - Statutory OFF ROAD Notice !

I think the OFF ROAD portion of the acronym tells you everything you need!

A car in similar state is left outside my mums house. Its resident only parking, but the MOT ran out and its SORN. Clearly been left as the tyres is flat and hasnt moved in months.

I logged it as untaxed on DVLA and also with the council as abandoned

You could used to report abandoned vehicles to your local council, but they don’t want to know anymore. Hence loads of old shonkers parked up in various places wasting car parking spaces. Eg I noticed this heap earlier today, been there more than a year

That van doesn’t look great either.

It took 18 months of me reporting a similar car before they finally turned up to clamp it. You'd have thought it was a nice easy one for them, as it wasn't going anywhere.

Incidentally, that car owners boyfriend ran round in a SORN'd (and no MoT) Merc for over 2 years with me constantly reporting it. Nothing was ever done about it. I assume SORN'd cars on the road aren't a priority.
