Was just scanning another thread about a good value for money iPace and getting very interested when I saw the image below of where the LCD is located. Most cars are the same. IMO it's too low, I like to at least have peripheral vision on the road when glancing down at a screen or control. But then most cars are like this it seems to me.

Just curious if this is just me?

Personally, I want a screen to be well below the windscreen level, particularly for night driving, as it helps with my eyes. The ICE screen should be something one occasionally interacts with, rather than regularly, so it is demoted down.

Sadly, with manufacturers having a kink for putting everything possible into the ICE, it gets promoted higher up the dashboard.

Bring back physical controls for core and regularly used actions, then leave the ICE for nav, media and infrequently interacted with car settings

Same here, much prefer it in that configuration.

I think it depends what is on the screen. If you have a display behind the steering wheel or a heads up display then it doesn't matter too much. There is an increased number of cars with everything including speedo on the main screen though and I think that needs to be relatively high up so you can see it without looking down.

You want a screen above the steering wheel? I think (and hope) that's unlikely.

No I mean that where cars have a screen where the instrument panel traditionally is, I'm fine with a lower screen in the centre. Lots of new cars have nothing in this area (see Tesla) and display speed etc on the main screen which can then benefit from being closer to the driver line of sight

I don’t mind this at all I much prefer a screen to be integrated into the dash like this rather than dominating the whole interior (I’m looking at you Tesla).

I wear varifocals, and I can't see a screen that's low down without physically moving my head so that it's in the right part of my lenses. I have no problem with physical buttons in that area but reading a satnav is difficult.

I don't like screens perched on top of the dash either mind you....

The disadvantage of a screen that low is it's a P.i.T.A. when it comes to satnav...

I like the screen to be high, so I don’t have to spend as long looking away from the road. The layout in the Mustang above looks good.

A HUD would suit me I think!

They are great, my BMW iX has one that makes it look like the image is overing above the bonnet, it's miles better than the early ones where you could see where it was being projected onto.

It's just about the only thing I like about the car hehe

I like it. Far better than the iPad stuck to the dashboard that seems to suffice in most cars.

Having said this I can't help thinking that an iPad combined with an API for interrogating and controlling car functions in a study mount would be a better solution. That way it becomes easy to update the UI frequently, including the display quality. It also has the advantage that the car would have to be usable without the iPad present - i.e. knobs and buttons....

The screen to the left is the one that has the touchscreen buttons that in effect operate everything.
It is fairly simple to use and there are shortcuts to what can be already fed in.
Doesn’t mean on the go you dont still have to be a tad careful of what you try and press but in reality set up once engine turned on and static.
Things like disarming the speed warnings and lane departure can be very simply turned off by pressing a button on the steering wheel - easiest I have yet seen.
Thankfully engine and gearbox are old school which was why purchased.

It’s too low and very dated now.

Having now moved to the latest designs with a Tesla and BMW being high up with digital dashes it is just better and safer.

I basically never touch a modern screen when I’m driving. Blows my mind how some drivers are always fiddling with the screen or buttons like toddlers when driving.

We have just replaced my wife's car. She does a low annual mileage and we end ed up choosing between a Yaris and a Jazz. We got the Jazz and one of the reasons was the screen. The Yaris' was too high and she found distracting. Fine by me – I preferred the Honda screen anyway. There were other factors too but it was a significant consideration.
