Car Tax & Registration at Post Office
Discussion
Hi all,
We bought a car through a scrap yard that had been stolen recovered. Had all the bits of paper from the local constabulary in it to say it had been recovered.
We also had the document from the auction house that the scrap yard bought it from and confirmation it had been paid out by the previous owners insurer so it cannot be reclaimed by them.
Went to the Post Office to tax and register the car but they said the needed it to be insured.
Got the car insured.
Now the Post Office still can't tax or register it as they need the previous owners post code (the auction house doesn't count) so after having the car for months while it's been checked over mechanically and been restored we're potentially STILL going to have a minimum of 4 weeks while the DVLA fanny about and take their time doing their investigations, even though we've sent all the documentation we have and the V62.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
Crazy that in this day and age we're still having to do things by snail mail.

I've only been in a similar situation once where I bought a car off someone I know but it had no V5 and was in need of a lot of repair.
I requested the V5 as soon as I had the car on my drive and it arrived within a couple of weeks whilst I was still repairing the car.
If you have submitted the V62 it should be 1-2 weeks, I assume from your post you have held off applying for a V5 up to this point? Unfortunately the DVLA are in many ways still quite old fashioned as a number of Government departments are so it's a waiting game, you can't really push them because you have little choice other than to follow their procedures

I'm not entirely sure how he does what he does, but he will get your car taxed within 24h.

Hi,
Thanks for coming back to me.
It’s not just the taxing. It’s getting the car registered so we receive the V5 but because it’s stolen/recovered I’m sure the DVLA take a minimum of 4 weeks to do their investigations.
What I’m worried about is taxing it, sending off the V62 and driving around only to get pulled over while I’m waiting for the V5 to come back for the DVLA to say there’s some sort of problem and the V5 won’t be issued.
For me, once I’ve got the V5 there’s no unexpected dramas to be had.
Thanks for coming back to me.

I think you are overly concerned. V5 is not proof of ownership so I'm struggling to understand what the issue would be.Thanks for coming back to me.

Recently bought a car at an auction with no V5. Walked down to the nearest post office completed the V62 and taxed the car at the same time. On the receipt it has the reg and the date you’ve taxed it until. My understanding was this is a grey area for post offices but there are plenty around if the first one says no.
