Audi previews new F1 car with R26 Concept

Not long now before Audi's Formula 1 debut - here's what to expect in Melbourne

This is the Audi R26 Concept (take that, Renault), a preview of what its Formula 1 car will look like for the 2026 season. Old habits die hard, clearly; where most teams reveal their new racer in competition trim just ahead of the season, Audi is hinting at what’s to come the year before like this is an upcoming production car. The real thing is coming in January.

And, believe it or not, Audi suggests the look of the R26 actually embraces its new brand identity, designed around the same themes that its future road cars will adhere to. All part of the reinvention, see - check out the Concept C for further proof. “We are implementing a unifying design language that draws together every aspect of our organization,” said Audi Chief Creative Officer Massimo Frascella. The design philosophy is now said to be underpinned by four ideas: clear, technical, intelligent and emotional. Audi says that can be seen in the R26’s ‘minimalist graphic surfaces, defined by precise geometric cuts’, which you were probably all going to say anyway. While the finished article will be decked out in sponsors’ liveries, the titanium, carbon black and Audi Red will continue as a colour combination. The four rings are red, because it’s sporty.

Audi isn’t simply in F1 to look cool, either, however smart a 2026-spec racer looks in its birthday suit. It isn’t just to sell more cars, either, even though it’s suggested that 1.6 billion people watched F1 on TV last year. It wants to win, to win consistently and win in the near future. Gernot Döllner, Audi CEO, said: “We are not entering Formula 1 just to be there. We want to win. At the same time, we know that you don’t become a top team in Formula 1 overnight. It takes time, perseverance and tireless questioning of the status quo. By 2030, we want to fight for the World Championship title.”

They’re nothing if not ambitious, then, and it doesn’t stop at mere race wins. Dollner believes that Audi’s presence in F1 will “be a catalyst for the change towards a leaner, faster and more innovative Audi.” Easy to dismiss, perhaps, as another motorsport press conference soundbite, but think of what the brand has achieved for its production cars from motorsport; four-wheel drive in rallying feels like the obvious one, though don’t forget the huge diesel and hybrid advances made in the years of Le Mans dominance. Audi back in the top tier of motorsport should make for a better Audi all round, and it arguably couldn’t come at a better time given some recent cars haven’t quite hit the spot. Don’t forget that Technical Centre in Bicester, too - like so many F1 teams, there’ll be a strong British contingent in the Audi effort. So 2026 looks like being another fascinating F1 season. 114 days to go…

Will be interesting to watch the Audi F1 journey.

Many have failed - Toyota and Lotus / Caterham in recent memory, but there have been successes too - Merc, Honda, and BMW did quite well too.

it will be weird to see an Audi aggressively tailgating, undertaking and the occasional bumping not on the m25

What have they actually launched here? A 'car' with the standard FIA 2026 surfaces and no sponsors ? Its worse than the reveals the teams do each year that are actually just the same generic FIA body with updated stickers

Can just see the car now, holding everyone up at the front and not letting anyone pass or driving so close behind that you can see the whites of the eyes in the mirror.

Looks much better than the current crop with all those winglets. Perhaps the paint job but is it shorter too than the extended funeral car thingy that's been going on?

Needs a grille. Something big enough to 'fierce' other cars out of the way.

That'll be the fairly radical rules changes for next year then...?

I think it's the livery, no? Without the sponsorship obviously.

(I'm also confused tbh but that's about all I can tell they could possibly be showing)

If anyone can, Audi / VW can. Expect a better debut than the Yanks.

That looks awfully like a DRS actuator in the middle of the rear wing. I thought DRS was being eliminated in the 2026 regs.

Just a revamped Sauber tbh.

All teams with new rules.

Needs "F1 brake lights", a fart map, and clouds of vape smoke billowing out of the cockpit to complete the look.

The ride looks terrible, and it's clearly set up for chronic understeer. Apparently it's what the drivers want.

What I mean, but articulated poorly ( biglaugh ) was I dont think its a livery without the sponsors! The FW14B wouldn't look anywhere near as iconic without the Canon, Camel and Elf sponsors for example

I think they just wanted to remind everyone that they are entering F1 next year, as all the talk lately has been about Cadillac.

By the team that started out as the de-facto works Mercedes F1 team

Then later was owned by BMW

And more recently known as Alfa Romeo

And is soon to become an Audi named after Renault.

I'm sure the blue/purple of their title sponsor Revolut will be seamlessly integrated into these traditional Audi colours... hehe

I'm intrigued as to why Audi re-branded it to "Audi" in year 1, unless that was an unavoidable contractual obligation. Surely you'd keep the Sauber brand in years 1 - 3 until the results start coming through, then switch to full Audi livery and trumpet your presence at the top of the table. Better that than have a billion people watch your premium luxury brand come home 14th and 17th every weekend for 3 years. Either that or Audi are massively sandbagging and expect to repeat what they have done in world rally / touring car / IMSA / Le Mans / WEC etc and simply blow the opposition away from day 1
