Golf GTI 50 bags new FWD Nurburgring record

There have been fast Golfs at the Nordschleife before - but none as fast as the flying 50...

Never let it be said that VW doesn’t still care about hot hatches. Because having already claimed a very respectable 7:46 for the Edition 50 GTI - besting both the current Golf R and Mk7 Clubsport S - it’s gone and had another more impressive go. Last year’s run was in less than perfect conditions; now, with better weather, a 7:44.523 has been officially recorded. Even faster than what was already the fastest series production Volkswagen in history.

But there’s another achievement unlocked by going a couple of seconds faster, as it makes the Golf GTI Edition 50 the fastest front-wheel drive production car around the Nurburgring. By a tiny margin - the Civic Type R used to have the record, at 7:44.881 - but as Dominic Toretto has always told us, it doesn’t matter if you win by an inch or a mile. Winning’s winning. And it’s hardly like Honda is going to come back with a new FWD rocketship to reclaim the record.

It would be amazing if it did, of course, but the glory days of a decade or so ago, when multiple manufacturers duked it out for Nordschleife glory, seem a long way behind us. Indeed it’s hard to imagine VW facing any kind of competition for the record in the immediate future, given the dearth of front-driven performance cars available. The FWD hatches that are out there, petrol or battery powered, aren’t so potent, and those that might be able to match that time - think GR Yaris - are four-wheel drive. All the more reason to go for broke now and claim a new fastest time.

Having been responsible for so many hot Golf laps over the years, Benny Leuchter was driving again for the 7:44. “The Nordschleife is unique with its bends, very different sections, bumps and even jumps. And the same is true for this GTI: with impressive power, a very neutral set-up and at the same time the ability to take any bumps in its stride,” he said. “The Golf GTI Edition 50 is therefore more than just an anniversary model: it shows what performance in the compact segment can feel like when technical expertise, passion and 50 years of GTI history come together.” A nice bit of track day kudos for those Golf buyers soon to receive their car. As long as they optioned on the Performance Pack, of course…

Yawn, even if the time justifies the article. I'll have a CTR, thanks.

FWD good, auto gearbox - not so good.

Not the traditional hot hatch and I suspect the gearbox made the difference.

congrats and respect for VW for actually setting benchmarks unlike Ferrari etc who don't like to benchmark their cars vs others

Well said - 3 years' worth of car and tyre development, and VW didn't even manage to go 0.5 seconds faster than the Honda, despite having the benefit of a 'seemless shift' gearbox? Seems a bit pathetic tbh - i'll take the Civic too.

As an FL5 owner I congratulate the VW team and the driver of course, but do agree, it makes the FL5 time more impressive (and the driver) as it was manually rowed all lap

Always think the IOM have missed a trick here. A TT time would be so much more interesting a measure for mortal cars. The ring is a track, the TT a road.
Would also be fun to see.

Easier access to the Ring is possibly one reason. Also, as you said the IOM is a road, a two way road, so not easy just to close off and have assoicated emergency equipment at hand because VW want to carry out a minor publicity stunt, stunt might be harsh but I'm sure you get my point.
Anyway, better chance of death at IOM than the Ring, me thinks.

Did he? Did he really?

If he did he may just be the world's fastest PR officer.

yeah I get the intent smilo but these are road cars and drivers could/would die -that would take the edge of the PR and press release wink

I thought the 50 bags in the title was referring to the cost at first glance.

You weren’t the only one! biggrin. I had to read the title a couple of times to see it wasn’t a pricey Ring version of the GTi

Wasn't the Civic time a bit of a fudge, given it wasn't a production spec car?

Yep me too. Although I think the price is about 50 bags isn’t it?

From a previous review it’s 51 bags with a couple of options, so think the title needs to be updated biggrin

It was a FL5 Civic Type R ‘s grade’ and I agree it’s not clear whether an identical spec car was ever in production.
