Car park charge if you have a 2x2 numberplate
Discussion
Wondering if anyone has had a problem when paying for car parking at a machine with a 2x2 number plate. Just had a PCN from Keswick ( but have had problems in Wales and France)
Thought I’d done all the right things at the machine -got a ticket and displayed as required.
The ticket appears to have only the 2 letters but not the two numbers before the letters.
I always keep parking tickets for 3 months in case something like this happens.
Has anyone else had similar?
I have appealed- though finding the form on their website was a challenge. Cumbria parking services if you are interested. The usual wording that if you lose the appeal you cannot have the lesser payment etc.
It only seems to happen with the car with this plate reg format.
Is there a solution to prevent it?

It sounds like you've paid for pay & display parking but still received a PCN, so your challenge should be easy enough, particularly if you've still got the P&D ticket as proof of payment.
BTW, my car has a 1 x 3 number plate, and I've never had problems with P&D machines because of it.

ANPR lets me in OK, then on exit it reads the plate as NN XX every single time.
So same cameras (I assume) same tech, but why does 1 work and the other not ??
IIRC ANPR doesn't do much on entry, just takes a pic & loads it into software, then when you come to pay is when you are having the issue when it tries to find the entry. So same cameras (I assume) same tech, but why does 1 work and the other not ??
No matter what format the plate it will let you in.
I had this before at a CP and it did not recognise that my plate (spaced correctly etc) was XX11XXX, it only saw 1 x number 1, but it did suggest the one with 1 x number 1, which I paid for as the time was correct and just made sure I took a pic of the machine display, my plate & kept the ticket.

Well an update to the appeal.
Letter states - slightly abbreviated
Having noted your comments and checked the evidence gathered we are satisfied the parking charge has been issued correctly and your appeal is rejected.
It is the responsibility of the driver that=payment has been made and validated by entering the full registration number. You have failed to enter your full and correct registration- only FL was entered. As a gesture of goodwill we have reduced the parking charge to £20 admin fee. The reduced fee is valid for 14 days from the date of this letter. Appeals must be submitted to the IAS within 28 days. If the appeal is rejected the full charge will apply. After this time the parking charge will increase to £100.
The ticket did just state FL and no number. I suspect as the reg is 26 FL that the machine ignored the 26 as the standard number plate starts with letters and not numbers.
It feels bullying and as usual with these sorts of things it is easier to take the £20 option.
I will think for a couple of days but will probably take the easy option and move on albeit very irritated.
I suppose that not having the full reg on the ticket is a breach of term.

There are plenty of valid GB numberplates which start with a number first, and any parking machine should allow for the use of foreign plates as well so shouldn't do any format validation.
If you're sure that you entered the full numberplate and it ignored the numbers, and the machine is nearby, it would be worth demonstrating that it doesn't allow you to enter your numberplate correctly.
Whether that's worth the effort would also depend on whether it's a car park you're likely to need to use again. If that was my local station car park for instance it's worth more effort than a tourist car park in a town I'd be unlikely to visit again for years. If it was a council car park, it's also worth writing to your local councillor / MP as they are obliged to respond.

Are you able to go back to the car park and try buying another ticket the same way, and see if the same thing happens? Video yourself doing it as evidence.
Only worth trying if you can buy a super cheap ticket and it's nearby I suppose.
Unfortunately not. Keswick car park but I am in the Midlands. Otherwise I would have done so. Only worth trying if you can buy a super cheap ticket and it's nearby I suppose.

I've got several that are NNN L, and have never had a problem entering them into pay and display machines. My daily runs on a L NN plate and I have noticed that some ANPR systems don't register it properly - presumably thinking that it has only managed a partial read of the plate.

Unlikely to need anytime soon and don t live in the area but good advice thanks. If you're sure that you entered the full numberplate and it ignored the numbers, and the machine is nearby, it would be worth demonstrating that it doesn't allow you to enter your numberplate correctly.

Also my other half dealt with the machine but swears he put the number in. However dinner is now on him.

You couple further appeal but it's unlikely to succeed. They may or may not take you to court. Either way, they won't win as they haven't suffered any financial loss.
So either pay £20 or tolerate all the crap they throw at you before court.
Yes - did think that but at the moment I really don’t need the crap. I suppose as they have had to investigate the appeal and send me a letter then I have had my twenty quid worth. CheersSo either pay £20 or tolerate all the crap they throw at you before court.

Far be it for me to say what to do, but I would fight it all the way to court. I would also tell them any response by you will be another £50 added to be recompensed. I would photo the V5, redacted as needed, and include that.
Tempted. Really tempted but have decided on the easy option. Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
