Private number plate question

The BMW has a private, but it's now time to spruce it up for sale and I'll transfer the plate onto the MX5 for the time being.

Question is, will it be reassigned the original plate it had when I bought it?

IIRC it's random but the chances are you'll get the original back.

Do you have to state what it was? Or request it in some way? It would make the paperwork clean and tidy.

How long does it take to transfer a plate to another vehicle? isit quicker to put your plate on retention?

I'm not sure if it is quicker or not.

I own both cars and they are both taxed etc so it should be straight forward enough...

Nope, same length of time to get your V5 back, had a nice conversation with a member of staff at DVLA Chester before Christmas about it

I've done this twice now and always got the original plate. They must keep it on record as I was never asked.

I've changed mine 5 times and always got the original plate back. Found it to be the same transfer time direct to a car as retention.
