Hi Folks.

My eldest is due to start driving in the next year and my investigations so far are leading me to believe that, short of driving around uninsured, it is impossible to avoid being bent over and f****d up the a**e by the insurance companies. eek

Does anyone know if this is definitely the case or are there any reasonable ways of getting him on the road?

What is everyone else's experience?

Cheers chaps

Third Party Fire and Theft and Aviva/Admiral are good for young drivers.
I know this because I've just turned 20 wink

Give it a go. What car is it that's going to be insured?

I'd be happy to fit the car to the right insurance scheme if necessary but it seems to cost thousands even to insure a 1 ltr or 1.2 ltr hatchback.

It's a lot of money. My old Corsa 1.0 comfort was £1700 to insure!!!
I pay £1100 now on a Sporting Punto which is still a rip off.

My insurance is with Admiral, we have a multicar policy and we have 3 group 20 cars and 2 lower grouped cars under the main policy.

I Im 17 and have a 1.8 Astra bertone coupe with Big brake upgrade and a few other mods and fully comp they charged me 1675 quid for a sub policy that still gives no claims each year........ Happy days !

My daughter (17 yo) is currently learning to drive. If we can get insurance on her little 1ltr Yaris at under £2k, I'll consider that a result.

Just done this for my daughter cheapest Admiral but only by adding me and wife as named drivers went down from £1900 to £995 be careful of cheap quotes on provisional licence as some treble when passed test.
Sorry as you have a son and I am afraid they are much higher to insure it is crazy how you teach your children to get on in life and how do they expect a 17 year old to fund 2-4K a year on insurance as a parent you try and make them stand on their own two feet my eldests boyfriend passed 2 years ago and cannot afford car or insurance how far do you go in helping them.I have stumped up this year and will probably have to until they get a better paying job the whole thing blows your mind and wonder where it is all going the whole country is fked up

Happy days?? £1675?? Bloody hell!

Maybe I need to get him on to a motorbike!

There really should be a way to sort this situation out - it's absolute extortion.

Check difference between fully comp and third party F&T, fully comp is generally cheaper for me
Also difference for car being parked on street and on drive

Get a car out of the ordinary as well, a volvo?
Fronting is a no go now really...

It is what it is, I'm 21 with 2 years ncb and still pay over 1k for a 1.6 and I can't see things changing anytime soon in terms of prices for young drivers. Put yourself in the insurance companies position, would you want to insure a 17 year old new driver for a year for under 2k? I wouldn't.

fronting a no no, but how about just letting him be a named driver on your car/your second car (as long as it is your car)? Won't accrue the NCB but age seems a bigger factor than pure NCB nowadays. Otherwise, would he accrue any NCB on a bike policy, something like a 125 or even a moped? Probably not what he wants but any transportation is better than none at that age.

I think this is a bomb that has just gone bang.
If you are under 25 then the ins companies dont want you, if you are also a boy forget it.
4 and a bit yers ago my wife and I purchased a new additional car for us that the kids could learn in and have some use of.
Year 1, wife and I and daughter when she got to 17 as learner and then after she passed test, £600 ish
Year 2 as above but daughter 10 months acident free driving, £600 ish
Year 3 as abovebut daughter 22 months acident free and add 17 year old son as learner and then new driver, £600ish
year 4 add 12 months accident free to everyone, £600 ish
Year 5 add another 12 months acident free driving and Rospa gold for son,

£1700 ish WTF

As both children are away at uni, not with this car, daughter now has her own car and we insure business, tractors and another car with them we expected some negotiation, nothing.

The thing that anoyes me most is the total lack of consideration for anny other factors other than age and gender, there is nothing they can do to demonstrate reduced risk.

the fine for no insurance is £200 ish, seems like good ods to me.

sorry, that doesn't wash. Insurance is a competitive market and yet no one is trying to win this business - there must be some collusion.

Surely the risk could be soaked up with high excesses and deposits. That way only the poor drivers pay the big money.

Classic car policy all the way.

(The first person to say you can't get one under the age of 21 gets a poke in the eye with a sharp stick)

17 years old, TPFT, Unlimited mileage, 30 day European cover on a 1977 1.8 MGB GT cost me £1034 through Footman James (phone for a quote no chance on line)
Someone else I know also got insured with them on an MGB GT for £890.

I love insurance companies.

I recently, as a 17 year old, wanted to insure a 1.8ltr Vauxhall worth only £145. I put the excess at £1000 to try and make it easier, so i'd pay nearly 7 times the value of the car before they have to pay anything out.

Yes sir, that'll be ONLY £9863.14.

So, i'd ONLY pay seventy times as much as the car to insure it.

Similar story to a mate of mine that has a 1600 4door MK2 Escort on Twin 45's, he is also 'TPFT' I think his insurance came to 1450 which stil isn't bad for a 17 year old with a modified car.
