New Spyker Aileron Spyder To Get Corvette V8

638bhp of supercharged muscle is heading to a Spyker near you...

The new Spyker Aileron Spyder seems to be having a difficult birth. Despite announcements last year that the new car will be built in a new facility in Coventry, nothing has yet rolled off the production line.

But news coming out of the Netherlands could explain why the world is having to wait for the new Dutch supercar: the planned Audi V8 is being dropped for the motor from a Corvette ZR1.

Spyker CEO Victor Muller told a Dutch magazine that "the Aileron Spyder will not be equipped with a 4.2 V8 engine sourced from Audi, but with a supercharged V8 from the States. The General Motors power plant is also used in the Corvette ZR1."

This means 638bhp and 604lb ft rather than 400bhp and 354lb ft of torque, which we definitely approve of...

I always thought previous Spykers looked a bit awkward, but this one looks lovely.

My exact thoughts too! The latest Spyker's actually look rather nice, especially in racing guise.

A little bit of DBS/XKR in there maybe? Which is no bad thing, looks stunning IMHO

That is a stunning looking motor car.

I've always loved Spykers, especially truely over the top interiors!

Thirded. Hope those Pagani shots are just a poor artists impression - not a patch on the Zonda, which I suspect will mean Zonda values keep climbing...

A few years back I went to the factory and saw an almost complete Aileron, except with exposed/unfinished rivets and an orange interior - sounds putrid, but the effect was stunning. Lovely designs and not losing their way, unlike Pagani

Very nice - lots of the good bits of many cars in it.

Get on and make some

Don't like it, too many holes and vents with bits of chrome. Still nicer than many niche market cars though...especially recent Morgans

Its worth noting Lotus did a lot of engineering on this - in fact the suspension components are derived from the Lotus Evora, addressing many of the poor handling characteristics of the previous version. Lotus had a hand in the design of the aluminium space frame chassis as well as the steering, all of which have had rave reviews so far.

Makes you proud....

What poor handling characteristics of the old one - I haven't noticed anything? yes the original has a shorter wheelbase and more aggressive geometry but is a lot of fun. The Aileron is longer to accommodate a slushbox and the engineering more 'normal' to make it cheaper to make - yes it is Lotus derived because they are great at it - but the original C8 is very different, difficult to fabricate and has F1 style inboard springs/shocks and so on. Let's hope they can step up production on these softer models and start making some money.

Actually I think it's more likely to be the version in the CTS-V or 550bhp.
