I run two cars with them hehe Although I don't know anyone else my age who does, so I suspect in 5-10 years time the answers received would be very different.

I am not looking forward to having a go at this. There are a seemingly infinite amount of tiny parts !

It will be fun smile

I'll be honest, and say, no I don't, but I've never owned a car with a carburettor, I've only ever had fuel-injected ones. And I am only a 23 year old woman, so that's my defence too. wink

Had plenty of cars with them. Who needs this new fangled stop start technology, most of the carbed cars I've had will cut the engine when stationary anyway

My first 5 cars had them. The Mk3 Escort had a VV carb which only allowed a certain amount of adjustment then was screwed up. Duly refitted with a Weber.

Don't think you've missed much. Even the ones with automatic choke were a pain. My father used to annoy mother by spreading lumps of smelly carb over the kitchen worktops - with an Aga simmering gently in the corner. yikes

No. My old man could though and one of older friends served his time balancing carbs on E-Types and the like. He's a very old skool mechanic and nothing but disdain for modern 'fitters'

Indeed!

Suggestion; the poll should be revised to; "Can you describe the basic operation of a carburettor" Because most people would say they knew what it was, even if they didnt understand how it worked.

Yes I can rebuild them, I can also make new linkages for the likes of twin 40's, twin choke Webbers and all sorts of daft things you care to mention.

I do indeed, only being 23 years old and having rebuilt more than I can remember. I actually prefer carb'ed cars...I don't know what it is, It may well be that smell they all seem to share or most likely the sound of a set of weber 40's or 45's gargling away on a nice ford pinto/xflow.

Another characteristic I 'enjoyed' during my A-series-powered-metro-motoring-days was the engine running on for a good 15 seconds after turning the key off.

Almost as if the car was saying; "Auuuughh, are we here already?!"
