what 4x4 saloon towcar?

so im after a 4x4 saloon thats good for towing my kit car, aswell as commuting (mainly b roads). to replace the E46 328CI.

requirements are:

nice interior
petrol or diesel, preferably around 30mpg would be good
reliable
cheapish to run
bigish boot/folding rear seats
nice to drive
would rather an auto

budget is between 3-4K, but would prefer nearer the 3K mark.

so far ive only come up with either the subaru legasy 2.5, or the audi A4 quattro 3.0.

so any suggestions?

Legacy is a good option or the Subaru Forester ?
Volvo XC estate of some sort ?

Jaguar X-Type 2.5 or 3.0? All these are permanent AWD.

Passat 4motion, although most are 2.8 v6 so you will struggle to see anywhere near 30mpg, a few diesel 4motions do exist though. Rear seats don't fold though.

Ovlov of some sort. Could probably get a reasonable V70 albeit with high miles for your money?
