Just did some MPG calculations.....

Went to a couple of meetings in the Lexus LS400 yesterday and covered just under 225 miles. Most of this was motorway with the cruise set to 75, or 50 through the average camera sections.

Just doing some MPG calculations this equates to 17.81 mpg. I had expected more, but I guess it's not so bad for a 12 year old, 111.000 mile 4.0 V8 barge......or so I'll tell myself.

That does seem rather low, doesn't it? What are its official, fresh out of the showroom, stats supposed to be?

I would expect more. I used to get 25mpg out of a 1997 4.0 straight six Jeep Cherokee on regular motorway runs at almost constant 70mph.

Lexus owners clubs suggest people are seeing from 16 - 30mpg with early twenties being the norm.

I'm going to have another crack it, being a bit more scientific with my calculations. This was a bit 'back of fag packet' but close enough to only be out by 1 or so mpg.

Most was motorway, but I did one bit of cross country from the M1 over to the M40.

I think when new in 89 Lexus claimed around 20mpg, which I think was class leading at the time.

Something's wrong then. Stat or temp sensor? Where does the temp needle sit - should be dead half way on the Mk3 after 5 or so mins warmup.

My Mk4, Cruise @ 70 >30mpg. Half that cold around town stop start though.

If the class in question was tanks then, yeah, I'd be inclined to agree. I guess it's a pretty decent marker to show how well engines have developed, particularly over the last five or six years.

Temp is spot on, and the car has FLSH with the last being only a couple of thousand ago.

As said, I'll have to have another crack as I did encounter traffic along the way at times. Got an early Saturday morning run soon, so i'll have another go.

Having said all that, I'm trying to squeeze as many miles as I can out of the Mondeo at the moment and even being as soft and gentle as I can, it's still averaging 33mpg and that's a twinky 1,998cc 4-pot.

That journey should have been about half a tankful which would average out about 22.5mpg

Now you ask I realise that I've never worked it out. I guess as I use it for fun the MPG doesn't bother me so much with the TVR.

Had two many moons ago the first one,a G reg. Replaced a 3.6 XJ40 and was noticeably better on fuel even though on motorways,at least it was faster. The second one on a J slight facelift, bigger wheels etc was slower and more thirsty! It went back to the dealer to be checked out and the demo they lent me was worse.

That's very very poor mileage out of an LS400.. especially considering it's UK MPG.

I have driven those cars plenty of times, cruising at 75-80 with the cruise control on I used to average, oh, 22-23. And that's US MPG.

Check air filter, and it probably needs a new set of spark plugs.. at 50mph with the cruise on, unless you're driving over the alps an LS400 should be getting close to 25mpg US, that's nearly 30mpg UK and I'd expect to see at 75mph, with the cruise on, closer to 26mpg UK.

As stated earlier, it's unlikely to have anything wrong mechanically as it was recently serviced before I bought it, and I was fortunate enough to have a few Lexus chaps look over it for me a week or so ago. Must be my driving style
