What does this button do?

Traffic in the Mini section is very slow. So gonna post here and hope for the best.
Question is in the title, when I press it the button goes red. It's not a click button, it's a hold down one. Resets to 'off' when you let go.

I can only think it's something to do with power assisted brakes.

Don't really know much about brakes other than these are not servo. So when I push it what exactly does it mean?

It means the bulb works, I think. If it comes on without you pushing it, you're about to die.

Yeah it's to check the brake lights work, I have one on mine but it doesn't work .

The switch that is, the brake lights work - although the brakes currently don't .

Built into the brake fluid reservoir is a small "float" switch. If your brake system should be low on fluid (or spring a leak) this switch will be activated as the fluid level drops, and before you competely run out of fluid, will illuminate the red "brake" symbol on that switch to warn the driver. The switch is simply there to "test" that the warning illumination bulb works (because if the bulb had blown, then even if you had low fluid, it couldn't illuminate to let you know)

The owners manual probably contains something along the lines of "Once a week push and check the warning lamp illuminates" etc etc



(as you can see, People didn't trust electric things back then !!! (and tbh, with BL wiring, i can see why ;-)

it's a warning light for low brake fluid.

push to test and if the red light comes on it confirms that the warning light is working.

if the light comes on of it's own accord then your brake fluid level is low.

it has nothing to do with the brake lights and the fact that your brakes are non servo is neither here nor there - you still have brake fluid!

The later Minis changed the symbol to the modern "((!))" type instead of the pedal drawing.

And the push to test button is because, of course, the brake warning light does not come on when you turn the ignition on like it does on most cars.

I had that "push it to lit the light" button in my mini. I think i rewired it to foglight.
