Do it online, they check insurance that way. You wont get your tax disk for a day or 2 but print out your verification email and carry it with you

Do it online...? As long as the car shows up on the MOT and insurance databases as covered, your fine?

You even get a few days 'grace' in which you can get away with not having the disc in the window, so long as you have actually paid for it.

I'm waiting for mine, Paid on Friday, should turn up tomorrow, if it doesnt, I'm not worried.

I think you need either the V5 or the renewal letter to do it online....

You'll be fine, I've been driving round with no MOT for the last 5 months and was only notified by a PCSO yesterday smile

Do it online and you should be ok for the next few days.

Why? Surely all you need is the VIN which is written on several places on the car?

Yes, although at an old address.
If done online, tax will go there then.

Drama over, V5 found, thankfully,

I don't get what the fuss is over restricting how you can pay tax... are there criminal groups taxing other people's cars?
Dunno.

How often do you hear about people's car being "cloned" with a set of numberplates, so the criminal can them go commit some crime.

Would be harder to catch them out i'd imagine, if they had what appeared to be a valid tax disc?
You are kidding??

Did one of you buggers crash the DVLA site? hehe
I've been trying to get on to tax a motor all day and get this -

SORRY
Welcome to the DVLA's Vehicle Licensing Online

I am sorry the service is currently unavailable due to essential maintenance.

You can:
Try again later
OR

Apply for a tax disc at a licence-issuing Post Office® or DVLA Local Office (as applicable for the vehicle) using the reminder (Vehicle Licence Application/SORN Declaration) or the Registration Document/Certificate together with the Insurance Certificate or Cover Note, MOT Test Certificate/ GVT Test Certificate (if applicable) and fee.

You should have applied for a job at the DVLA too, they like people with your organisational skills!
