So is there a way around the new insurance rules?

As the rule that requires all cars to be insured or sorned is due in anytime soon I was just wondering what fellow PH’ers will be doing.

I currently keep all my cars taxed, but only 2 insured at any one time, I then just swap my insurance over to the car that I will use for a few months. So will there be any solution apart from sorn them then going to the hassle of re-taxing every time I drive?

Can't you SORN for insurance purposes, but still leave it taxed ?

No - if you SORN a car it's not taxed.

No under the new rules you have to send the tax back, the re tax everytime you want to drive it

Suggest you write to Mr Penning and ask him how it'll work for you, they really don't think these things through do they.....it always seems to affect the law abiding people rather than those they think they want to catch especially as the chances are that the genuinely uninsured are unlikely to have registered the vehicles either

SORN'd doesn't have to be insured. But if it's seen on a road or in a public place then you'll be getting a fine/points.

Either the car is Taxed & insured
or it is SORNed

Those are the only two options the continuous insurance scheme permits. The system seems to have been built on the assumption that all cars which are taxed will be present on the road at some time.

Well the way I read it the law will only be hitting the law abiding car enthusiasts, who may have more then one car taxed, for example my friend keeps his E-type taxed all year round but only insures it for about 4 months a year

So what would you do if one of your Uninsured cars got nicked while it wasnt insured?

I've got cars that I SORN over the winter and I have them insured on a "storage" only type cover.

TBH I thought that any car that wasn't SORN'd had to be insured already... Sort of made sense.. since your SORN declaration means its Off the Road, then any car that isnt sorned must be on the road therefore needs insuring.

..or have I missed something...

Does this have a bigger impact on traders with Trade plates? or are they exempt?

"Motorists will receive a letter telling them that their vehicle appears to be uninsured
and warning them that they will be fined unless they take action"

So I suppose you could continue as you have been, in the event of them writing to you you'd then have to either insure it or get the tax refunded & SORN.

Does it specifically say that when declaring SORN you must return the tax disc? Because at a quick glance I can't see that it does?

this new system may work in the ideal world. but they seem to have forgot one important thing.

we will now have to come in contact with the DVLA more often. i give it a couple months before the whole world breaks down,

I don’t think a date has been announced but some sites say a few months or maybe even by spring time

I suppose if you could sorn it with out sending it back then this would work great for people like me, unless the sorn automatically makes the tax invalid, its just not clear enough yet I suppose, but there is some hope!
