I have a Mondeo ST220, one fault accident 5 years ago, 24 year old male licence for 7, no points, no medical conditions etc. For the mondeo for a year costs me about £800 fully comp, with 10,000 miles average.

On an 2.2 Vectra which is 10 years old and worth about £800, with 4,000 miles per year, garaged at home etc is coming up to about £900 with all the insurers, and this is third party only!

The only exception to this is Elephant, who quoted about £570...

Still, i cant understand how a car which is more likely to be stolen, more expensive to repair, faster, bigger engine and parked on the driveway as fully comp, is still cheaper!

I suppose i can consider a multicar (not tried a quote yet), but my Mondeo insurance is paid for until June so i would be wasting a few months worth of paid insurance.

Bloody insurance.

Edit: Admiral Multicar - £570 for the Vectra and £560 for the Mondeo when it is due for renewal in a couple of months. Pfffft.

I take it you've asked for fully comp prices too? The one time I was after 3rd party it consistently came up as more expensive than fully comp. Again, bizarre but that's insurance for you!

This was the strange thing, fully comp was about £4 more than third party only, which i couldnt fathom out either.

What that tells you is that most claims for that type of car are not theft (more desirable cars to be stolen), not fire (not much history of going up in flames or being subject to arson attacks), not much damage to the car itself (possibly reasonably solid - possibly the typical owner doesn't give a st about repairing their car unless they have to) but fair bit of damage to other things.

The ST220 is a (relatively) specialist car...at least in comparison and for that reason tends to attract a slightly more discerning driver who doesn't leave it in such stty places etc etc etc and the prices just happen to even out.

As to why one insurer is massively cheaper than the others - they are trying to entice a particular risk bracket into taking their policy at the moment. Maybe they like younger drivers who will always renew allowing they to slowly creep the (relative) price up?

HTH!

Cheers

Is it even possible to get 3rd party only anymore?

Also, if anyone has any suggestions for companies cheaper than the admiral group, please go ahead. I've tried some 'specialist' insurance companies who are quoting in the four figure sums.

Those comparison sites (which i hate) are consistently giving me quotes of around £900.

When I was looking for cover for my £400 heap (now deceased) last July, I was trying to obtain the cheapest possible coverage, I tried loads of online quotes and also phoned many insurance companys.
All of them told me that TPF&T is the lowest level of cover they offer.
