Having used it with success years ago when I was on the bikes, and more recently when I had the Model 'A' Roadster replica (flat screen, dubious wipers), I followed my lad's recommendation and used his Rain-X glass cleaner. After thoroughly cleaning the screen yesterday, with meths, following washing the car, during a brief spell of sun, I then cleaned the screen with the Rain-X cleaner and later he used the car to go to work. It pi**ed down when he was on the way home late evening, and when I asked him how it was he said the screen was a bit smeary, like the blades were faulty, but better than the previous night. Came to work this morning; it was awful, very light rain on & off, and every time I came up behind anything the screen was just a mass of streaks of muck from the road and beads trying to form and run off but I kept needing to use the wash/wipe. This was at around 75mph. So once at work, (having brought my meths along) when the sun came out, and the screen was dry, I got to work and hope that I have managed to remove it all.
Sorry Dave - it don't work for me, and the wiper blades ARE OK.
I may use the Rain-X neat (still got the small bottle from when I had the Roadster) on the exterior mirrors, as on the Saab they do become difficult to see out of when it has been raining and the water dries into spots, then at night one cannot get a good vision with following vehicles' lights giving scatter.

Once had a car that had clearly been treated with this in the past - it was exactly as you describe except clarity was coming back as it was wearing off.

Remember Rain-X are sponsors of BRAKE, so I wouldn't give them a penny of my money!

With three more long days of this shift to go, best I keep my bottle of meths in my work bag then. Interesting about the sponsorship of BRAKE - not sure that will please one of the members of my family.......

i have used it for years the key to rain x. is to not use your wipers as much. and if you dont put it on well it doesnt work well. i drove to bournmouth last night and i didnt use my wipers once and it was chucking it down

Does not compute.

What daft product would be designed to be used on a windscreen with wiper blades, and then is less effective when used with wiper blades?!

if the water is blowing off the screen at a rate of knots you dont need wipers was it that hard to compute ?

I've used the stuff for a while now. Mainly on the Tuscan of old and most lately on the Cobra and track car. Not sure about using it on the Defender or Disco as they don't get driven fast enough! LOL.

It is a brilliant product, if applied well.

As said above, no need to use wipers when the water is streaming off (what it is meant to do).

It's not effective at low speeds though is it - so it'll still blur when you use wipers and so Pints' point still stands.

Nanolex is what you're looking for. It's a fantastic product, but needs the proper application with the proper glass cleaner. No streaks smile

Mixed results with rain-x too. Its best to apply a really thin layer to the screen and keep buffing until clear. Then the trick is to also treat your wiper blades too. Its amazing how much crud sits on the wiper blades and wiping this across your newly protected screen will cause the blurring.
Whilst occasionally it does seem to work for it's a PITA to remove if it doesnt cure correctly. I've not treated my current to rainx due to the time of year and I can't be bothered messing about with it.

I had lots of hair line scratches on my windscreen and took a rotary to it with a light compound. After removal I applied a few coats of Werkstat acylic gloss and now the rain beads off my screen ala rainx smile

I drove back and it was indeed raining a lot. I have silicon wipers, which after some use give the same effect as rain-x, by leaving a silicon residue on the screen. Now, as long as I am going fast enough I don't bother with wipers.

Don't by rain-x, get some silicon wipers and I am not talking about big bouncy t-shirt stretchers.

I've not used rain x on my front screen for a while, for the above reasons. On the side/rear windows, I love the beading effect. Interesting suggestion og Aquapel though, I've not heard of this before thumbup

I wouldn't use Rain-X, there are plenty of anti-fog and glass cleaning products from companies that don't sponsor anti-motoring facists like BRAKE.
