Once again I call on the Pistonhead collective for advice.

The background..
My current car is a Subaru Outback H6 3.0 . I really enjoy it ..the only thing that annoys me is the fact that despite have such a nice 6 cylinder engine , the noise is so very muted , infact you cant actually hear the exhaust note, it's the engine you hear.
My excuse..
This range of Legacy and Outback 03-06 are well known for corroded exhaust problems and mine is no exeption.. Mine already has been welded many times at the joints of the sections, and once in my 5 month ownership at the Y split to the 2 backboxes . So .. I'm thinking of getting a local firm to build and fit a custom exhaust , making sure that its the correct pipework and no drop in back-pressure etc ,and , here's me getting to the point , making it a bit more "vocal", letting that 6 cylinder noise out. It's gonna cost about half of an OE system ( £1200 apparantly!!!! ) which will have to get replaced at some point , and I'm planning on keeping the car for quite a while.
So .. What do you think? Is this chavy? Do you think it would ruin such a nice car and I should just make do with the way Subaru intended? I just want that lovely 6 cylinder purr biggrin

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Steve

Have a look at the hayward and scott exhausts, the do some aftermarket ones for he legacy.

I have used them for a exhaust on my TriBeCa, same 3.0h6 as yours.

Get a Powerflow stuck on there, probs better and cheaper than OEM!

No, just get enough silencers in there. A deeper tone would be great.

Straight through de-cat not quite so subtle!!

I was in a similar boat with my Vectra when the back boxes rotted out. No aftermarket mild steel components available because the 2.0T sold in small numbers. A full s/s aftermarket system came in cheaper than GM mild steel, dealer only back boxes.

The round 'slash' tailpipes are slightly bigger than the OE ovals. Only increased noise is due to the s/s resonance. Whether it's chav or not I don't really care as I got a good deal on Magnex bankruptcy stock.

If you're keeping the car go for it.

In a similar vein, I keep looking at getting stainless exhausts for my 1.3 and GTE 16V Mk2 Astras, simply becuase while parts are still available, they're either cheap and nasty and last about 2 years, or stupidly expensive for GM stuff. The GTE's backbox is £130, the 1.3 (which 'sports' a SRi backbox) is over £60 and doesn't have the chrome pipes any more.

As to being a Chavvy, driving an Astra with a (factory) spoiler pretty much dooms us anyway... rolleyes

Plus, go to the right place and you know it'll be awesome and fit superbly.

Nope I wouldn't say it was chav at all.

Try it in parts - replace the backbox with a much smaller one, ask for very similar ends to the original tail pipes. If it's still too muted for your tastes, go back and replace the mid-box with a set of pipes.

What makes it chav is when you replace the entire exhaust system with straight pipes and have the 5" diameter or worse tail pipes. And 6 of them.

Powerflow can do this and won't charge a fortune.

Lol! biggrin

I would replace sections but the whole system is so rusted but that is a good idea .. Might take a picture to show how bad it is!

I've got an H&S exhaust on my M5 - it's my favourite feature of the car, and the car has an awful lot of good points!
