This could be a cracking thread.

Always fancied a W8 (secretly still do...) as its a real sleeper. Is the the same 4.2 as Audi stuck in the A6?

The R36 is much newer but I suspect a 12 month old one would be a steal.

you buy the W8 because it's a W8 and is a clever ruse by VW to test the W platform before the phaeton

Never had one but heard the w8 was prone to overheating and oil usage.

But it must have sounded splendid.

W8's are one of those cars that perform way below their perception or sum of their parts. Slower than you think, noisier than you think, rubbish gearbox, uneconomical and unreliable. Only rarity makes them interesting.

R36's however are thumbup

/you taking the piss..?

the compact nature of the w8 layout generated more heat than the fans and cooking system could cope with.

It's come to my attention that the R36 only does 27 mpg on the official combined, so God alone knows what the means in the real world. Anyone got one - is 20 mpg realistic?

CO2 is 249g so that's £445 a year to tax at the moment...

I had one come past me on the M4. Based on its sound and speed alone, I'd say it's definitely worth the pain. cloud9

If buying an expensive car with a VW badge on the front depreciation should be your biggest worry, not a couple of hundred quid here or there on road tax!

I would love a Passat W8, debadged of course... If I got one in silver no-one would realise and simply think I'd put some different wheels on my TDI. The R36 to me is not as subtle.

Back in 2002 when I was a VW salesman we had a W8 on our demo fleet, I drove it regularly.

It wasn't really that fast and the gearbox was very sluggish, it had done 8,000 miles when we sold it at 5 months old and we discounted it by £9,000!

It only did around 16 to the gallon under our use wink it did sound fantastic though.

I prefer the W8, more discreet than the R36

Those quad mufflers kind of give the game away though.

I'd buy a W8 just for the engine sound

I know, I just resent paying VED - it feels like theft. As does filling my car with "tax" every couple of weeks...
