Will anyone confess to have owned or driven one of these, and what was it like ?

Yes. Epic sleeper car. Thirsty. I was even silly enough to get mine remapped. Torque is unbelievable. Did approx 34,000 miles in mine. Lost a small fortune in depreciation, but other than normal wear and tear items, no faults at all. Cabin is lovely.

I'd want a full folder of history if I were to buy one. And I would have another tomorrow, but don't rack up the miles anymore, so no point.

Almost bought one last year to replace my ML55 but was scared off by the inherent issues.
Still love the idea of a V10 though!!

Hy dad has the W12 6.0 petrol.

It's awesome when you get up to speed and stupidly quick.

Unfortunately weighing 2.5 tonnes, it doesn't handle too well and its not THAT impressive off the line, but once you get up to speed man it flys effortlessly.

Also averages 26-27mpg on a run which is a lot better than my dad was expecting ^^.

Have driven it a few times and it is a great cruising car smile

I've driven a Touareg with the same engine when they first came out. Obviously an SUV isn't going to drive like an exec but the engine was very impressive. Unlike anything else I'd experienced at the time, almost relentless shove.

I wouldn't buy a used one though they are reputed to be a nightmare to work on and have multiple points of failure. All based on internet hearsay though so I'm prepared to be corrected.

My money would be going on a V8 or the 3.0 TDI.

It's a diesel, so what would be the expected MPG. I'd probably use it as a weekend car, I've something smaller and more convienient for work travel.

Expect 24 - 28 if driven fairly lightly.

Robin - it's not exactly what I'd regard as a 'weekend car'! Unless you're planning on doing massive journeys?

Dad's had his for a year and a half now and has paid about £2.5k in repairs - that said half of that was to replace an ECU that drowned after water got in and an incompetent garage failed at sorting it out after ensuring us that there wasn't any water in there.

Also its the Bentley W12 engine, I don't know if that has a better reputation?

The rest of it was to replace a suspension component for its MOT.

Nothing outrageous really.

Had one for a weekend when there were still demonstrators about.

In diesel terms that engine is really quite epic.

With all toys working, a contender for the ultimate low key barge.

I've heard that too - turbo replacement is apparently an engine and transmission-out job, at 10+ hours each way.

Shocks on all Phaetons are a bit weird too - apparently all linked together, so need to be replaced as a set, that could well be bs though.

Brave pills needed for the big V10D, but kudos if you do buy it, I've only ever seen one Phaeton and one Touareg with it, the latter was used to tow a static steam engine to shows.

And he's talking about the W12 petrol Phaeton, mostly still relevant, but does acknowledge that the engine is different in his case.

Odd you should say that I took my MY2005 Golf GTi for it's first service and in the bay next to it was a Touareg V10 diesel which looked like the front end had been totally dismantled. I mentioned it to my mechanic and he told me it had taken them 3 days to fault find and strip it to that point. I suppose this was when they were fairly new so they might not have been familiar with them but imagine the bills outside warranty..........

Enough torque to pull a jumbo jet.

I'm not joking 5th gear actually did that, although it was in a Touareg

Would much rather have the W12. Difference in mpg probably minimal and less likely to let go?

The Phaeton W12 was speed restricted to 130mph in the USA. Must be 155mph in Erope though.
