We're all prone to drifting over the speed limit now and then, but have you ever seen two or more cars really going for it together on UK roads at proper licence-losing speeds? I remember one afternoon about 8 years ago seeing a Skyline R34 GTR and a Focus RS Mk1 hurtling past us down the M4 in South Wales at approaching twice the legal limit.

About 10 miles later we caught up with them, parked up on the hard-shoulder with smoke billowing out of the Nissan's engine bay. I was rather surprised since I thought the Ford would have been closer to its limits.

Only for short bursts - saw a DB9 and a 599 going at it back when they were both new. It quickly got well over 120 and they both slowed down though.

Once saw a Rover GSI turbo chasing a Sapphire Cosworth down the bypass, big clouds of smoke with each gear change from both cars about ten years ago. Got my thumbs up.

There was once this chap on a CBR 600 racing a Yamaha R1 - From limehouse tunnel about 16 or so miles along the A13. Through stationary traffic at ridiculous speeds to out on the A13 up to speeds of 1.55 Leptons and beyond.

It boiled down to who had the bigger balls so I am told.

Fun to watch.

Fastest thing I've witnessed was a police Volvo 850 T5 Estate going past me at full pelt on the M1 a few years ago. Think it made my car rock as it must have been flying at 150 or more. hehe

But no really fast racers.

So do I, but never once have I seen a 'race'... I do see the Barry boys loitering about in the Fir Tree Road bus stop attracting police attention though! They ain't half a bright bunch!

Almost every time I use the M4 I see a couple of cars 'convoy at high speed'.

Seen a Mk2 Fiesta reeling in a 996 turbo and passing it around double the speed limit.

Also been in a Corsa passing a DB7 at around 140mph.
I see no reason to question anything written here. none at all.

I remember being overtaken by a four-car race between Kenilworth and Coventry on the Kenilworth road; they were seriously going for it on the open road but did stop for the traffic lights at the A45. (Although given that's pretty much the end of the fast section it could have been their self-imposed finish line).

Can't recall all the cars, however I'm pretty sure a 944 and a late-'80s RX-7 were involved.

On the face of it, seems legit.

Quite amusing.

Never really seen any giants up against each other on the road though.
Pah!!

I once saw a Mondeo doing 269mph and passing a Veyron
I remember that. Didn't see much of it though as I was overtaking them both doing 4000mph on my pushbike at the time.

I may or may not have had a fun 'play' with the Grasshopper R34 on the way back from Japfest a fair few years ago. Got to some quite magnificent speeds on the M6 through Birmingham.

Mk2 Fiesta, red, with Lightning McQueen stickers on it.

2.1ZVH turbo with just short of 350bhp, plus some sort of nitrous set up in the boot.

The Corsa was an SBD built 2.0XE making 250bhp+. I still have pictures of both cars somewhere. Both belonged to mates, who are now both semi-pro racers.
Those sound entertaining, yeah i'd love to see the photos?

And what do they race nowadays? I follow quite a few club and major series in the UK so theres a chance i'll have seen them racing at some point!

doogz could be grammatically correctly if not physically so.

The DB was doing 140, that i believe. However what he failed to put down was he was in a Corsa rattling its guts out at 80 going the other way...so yes he did pass an Aston doing 140mph,And could even claim legitimaely he saw it recede at a fair rates of knots in his rear view mirror.

When I was young and stupider I once raced a chap I knew.

It started on the way home from a party - neither driver had drunk anything all night, but sometimes you can catch being stupid by osmosis.

We both stopped at a set of red lights. I was in the right hand lane.

There was some car-to-car jeering.

When the lights went amber we both floored it, neither of us getting more than a car's length ahead as we accelerated flat out through the gears up the hill to the point wher the two lanes merged back to one.

After about 20 seconds we were still neck and neck, but he bottled it because he didn't want to break the 40mph limit.

He was 4 up in an 850cc mini, I was two up in my 602cc 2CV. Dullest race ever, but still really stupid. I'm glad I got it out of my system before I had access to a real car.

That Mondeo used to belong to my dog's tennis coach.

I was abroad and thought I was making pretty good progress at 151 on the GPS.

I had to move over for a Viper racing a Morgan Aero 8 making considerably better speed than I was.

I remember once watching a camera feed of a motorway leading into Newcastle city centre and seeing a Saxo VTS and a 106 GTi racing along. Both probably doing about 110mph or more. The thing that made it so dangerous was they kept the speed up as they entered an underpass with traffic filtering in from the left at right in a 50mph limit. It was a big risk. That one sticks with me, just because the cameras gave such a sense of how much faster they were going than all the other traffic on the road.

Another notable one was a classic Impreza STi import trying to pass a 911 Turbo on some B roads. The Impreza clearly the more skilled of the two, and reading the road much better. The 911 obviously getting wound up by the Impreza trying to pass, and after slowly going through each corner he would floor it and whizz off. The Impreza would try to pass but wasn't making much headway. Eventually the Impreza made it past, and the 911 went off looking to catch up, but the Impreza was away. They weren't going particularly fast, maybe 80mph on some NSL B roads where it was safe to do that speed. I was in my MR2 Turbo, which was no slouch in itself, yet I kept catching up with the pair on the corners where the 911 was slowing right down. I managed to pass it myself afterwards, on a sloping O/S bend with a good run up. The 911 didn't chase me down though, probably because I kept back until my moment came and then passed, whereas the Impreza was very obviously looking to be past from the off. The 911 driver reall should have just backed off and let the Impreza pass, it would have been the polite thing to do, rather than getting wound up and drawn into a competition.

I'll PM you, rather not plaster their names on a forum, whilst talking about some of their less than professional driving! tongue out
PM recieved, the Fiesta does have an impressive intercooler sticking out the front! So in terms of performance, i can believe the two hatchbacks in question could well move good people of PH!
